Strength training ladies - how often do you get a massage?

I've given up on my pulse gun. The further along I get in perimenopause, the more ineffective it gets. I've tried every setting, and nada.

I'd love to get a massage regularly but they are so farking expensive here. 100 bucks per hour is the going rate but I also live in a vhcol city.

Saving parents and older relatives from themselves - what's the line?

I just want to hear your stories about being dragged in to family drama to save adults from their own laziness, stupidity, and general irresponsibility.

My own situation is related to dealing with a house abandoned by relatives who were hoarders. They are almost ready about to pass and now "what to do with the house" has trickled down to the next generation, myself included. No one is stepping up but everyone is causing drama about it.

I'm so sick of dealing with other people's bullshit.

What are some things that have surprised you on your strength training journey?

  • Most of the guys at my gym are very supportive. I guess I just didn't think they would be.
  • Barbell clubs get... weird... really fast. I avoid them now.
  • I have developed strong opinions about weightlifting belts. And they are controversial.
  • I am surprised at how much flexibility comes into proper form. Stiff joints = poor form.
  • I am constantly surprised and exasperated about how little my doctors care about my strength training routine. I try to bring it up with them as a point of discussion about my health, and it is SO OBVIOUS that they don't process that information as a matter of whole health. I don't feel good about this.

I had a job interview that was simply a chatbot with a humanistic voice asking me to repeat my resume back to "her". I'm not sure how to process this.

Context: I applied to a job with my full resume and immediately got a text from a chatbot that represent the company and it wanted 5 minutes of my time. It was very upfront that it was an "AI/Chatbot". It called me and there was a human like voice asking me these questions:

  1. Do you have any questions about the job?

  2. What job did you hold in the last three years?

  3. What were your responsibilities at that job?

  4. It asked me questions I had already responded to in the job application.

I was really annoyed at the whole process but also surprised that any company that was hiring would bother with this type of duplicative process.

How would you feel if this happened to you?

Did you take up any hobbies after menopause? Which ones?

I find myself having no patience for "useless" hobbies and also unhelpfully painting broad strokes with the word "useless". I don't know what it is but I guess I lost my whimsy with my estrogen.

Looking for inspo: What hobby did you start after meno?

Off lead dog story - what's UP with these entitled people?

I went to a quiet, public park with my reactive boarding client. On my way in, I passed an adult couple walking their dog in the park with no lead. I pull up and struck up a conversation:

Me: My dog is reactive and will react to another dog charging him. Will you put your dog on lead?

Them: Oh our dog is reactive too! Reacts to everything? Will your dog be on lead?

Me: Of course, I always keep my dogs on lead.

Them: Well, we'll just walk ahead of you and then we'll be headed out anyway.

Like, could you just put your fucking dog on the fucking lead around your fucking neck? How fucking stupid do you have to be to walk a reactive dog without a lead through a public park?

What should I do with it? I don't want to kill it but I don't know if I can take it somewhere to donate it.

Dealing with the estate of a passed family member - guns and more!

First of all, get a will and handle your affairs, y'all. Making a mess that someone else has to clean up AFTER you die is peak selfish.

I am dealing with an estate that's a mess. Guns, drugs, etc left in the house that I'm going to have to clean out. What do I do with all this shit that is maybe legal, maybe not, like guns and drugs?

What shows are you watching right now? Please also list the plaform/network.

I am on the final season of Animal Kingdom - Netflix.

It's OK. Started strong but kinda got repetitive and boring toward the end.

Perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause -- what's the difference?

I feel like the lack of specificity of how these terms are used are making me read some of the literature incorrectly.

From a time perspective, menopause is just a single moment in time - an event vs. an era, right?

Menopause: the point at which you have not had a period for 12 months.

Post -menopause : your life after you have "achieved" menopause. I feel like most literature around "menopause" incorrectly use "menopause" when they mean "post-menopause".

Peri-menopause: the phase of life when your hormones are shifting in preparation for menopause.

What's your take on this?

Hello! I thought I'd pass along a tip about barbells that I learned the hard way: not all barbells are the same. Some are heavier, longer, and have a thicker shaft (I hear it).

When I started powerlifting, I did some of my workouts at an old, crusty, commercial, all-purpose gym. None of the barbells were labeled, and I also had no idea what I was doing, so I had no idea that sometimes I was using a women's bar, sometimes using a standard bar, sometimes using the ultra-heavy bars. I had no idea what the knurl was for or why I wouldn't want "stickier" knurl at times and less sticky knurl other times.

This article is a surprisingly thorough read about the bars:
https://www.majorfitness.com/blogs/wiki/how-long-is-a-barbell-understanding-sizes-types. This is also a good read: https://www.tworepcave.com/1024/olympic-bar-diameter-why-they-arent-all-the-same/ .

Here are some things I like, that you may not:

  • I like "women's bars" because they are smaller in diameter and easier on my hands.
  • I don't like a heavy knurl unless I'm deadlifting.
  • I don't like heavy knurls on olympic weightlifting. Ouch!
  • I do run my hands over a few barbells to see which one has the knurls for the type of workout I'm doing.
  • I am fussy about my clips. Clips are the only equipment I will bring to a gym with me.
  • I was coached to lift bare-handed and get callouses rather than lift with gloves. YMMV. I use a skin grater thing in the shower to keep my callouses in check.
  • When I'm scouting gyms, I am very picky about the condition of barbells and how patrons work with them. If they're lying about, rusted, bent... it's a "no" to the whole gym for me.
  • Just a tip: if you find yourself failing a bench press that you did only two days ago, check your barbell (!!). It might not be the same weight as the barbell you were using two days ago and it def make a difference.
  • Kettlebells also have varied shaft diameters. If you're like, how the heck are people swinging these things?, it might just be that your hands are too small for the diameter of the shaft of the kb handle and you need to find a kb that fits your hands. I have small diameter and large diameter kbs and I am much more nimble with the small diameter kbs.
  • A Smith machine's bar's diameter is closer to a women's barbell in case you need a point of reference. If a Smith machine's bar feels easier to deal with in your hands, you might want to consider getting a "woman's barbell" or asking your gym if they have any for you.
