Hi guys I’m currently waiting for my $1060 welfare cheque to deposit and noticed that my Allure Mastercard had taken $276 from it as payment while processing. I am with National Bank.
I have been unable to make payments on my card due to a broken leg and being unable to work but desperately needed the full government cheque to pay my rent this month. Is it legal for them to take from welfare cheques?
Today is Canada Day so I’m unable to call them but will be contacting them first thing tomorrow, I’m just uncertain how to get $3500 debt under control while I’m unable to work and may have to do a consumer proposal. I will be opening an account with Simplii for my next cheque so this doesn’t happen again. Any knowledge or advice would be greatly appreciated!

If your credit card and your bank account are with the same financial institution, the bank's system can automatically take money from your checking account to pay your card. However, doing this to protected social assistance funds is a violation of your rights.”
