Does anyone ever get punished by the narrative? [spoilers]
I'm still on Season One. The female characters are all varying levels of contemptible or stupid, and the male characters are just literally Satan. Nobody has any redeeming or positive qualities.
The show focuses on the female characters in a voyeuristic way, but all of them are terrible people. If the show is supposed to appeal to straight men who for whatever reason don't watch porn and thus have to get their naked women from HBO, why are all the girls so off-putting? These are the type of women straight men complain about on message boards. They're also the type that feminists complain about! They abandon their friends at parties or in dangerous situations, choose awful dudes or drugs over their friends, and so on.
If this is a male power fantasy, how come none of the guys are somebody you'd want to be? They all come off as future serial killers with no redeeming qualities other than that some of them can play American football. There are no scenes, so far, of them actually playing football, so it's not like it's a football show where I can imagine that I played football in high school and got a bunch of terrible chicks doing so. There are clips of the boys being congratulated for scoring a goal or winning a game, but no clips of the actual game itself.
Nate for example is a blatant psychopath who just gets away with everything and gets whatever he wants at all times without any narrative pushback, criticism, or punishment. He's the worst male character but there isn't really a good male character to contrast with him. All of the male characters are apathetic and take advantage of their female peers. Said female peers seem to have no interests other than hooking up with the psychopathic boys or doing drugs.
Is there any reason for me to finish this series? I want to be up on a popular topic and there are a lot of references within this show that come up in memes and in pop culture, so I want to be able to know what they mean. I can only find a few spoilers for this series even though a lot of memes come from clips of this series.
