Asked to leave work early due to sick child

My little boy is 22 months old. Has had at least 10+ ear infections since he has been born. Got ear tubes with ENT 3 weeks ago. Saturday we noticed he was getting a runny nose (usually means a nasty ear infection is to follow). Sure enough my husband texts me at work on Sunday saying our toddler has a low grade fever.

I got home from work Sunday night, took my toddlers temp and it’s 102. Hes not wanting to eat or take a sippy cup. I can’t get into the ENT until Thursday to check his ears. We give him Tylenol and the antibiotic ear drops that the ENT gave us and hope he’s better in the morning. I get up and leave for work around 6am. My toddler is still asleep.
I get a phone call from my husband saying his temp is 105.2 and he’s refusing to drink a sippy cup. I’m so beside myself because I feel so bad for my toddler, he’s miserable and I have no clue how to fix it. I hate calling into work. But my husband had already called in several times this year for our toddler being sick.
So I call my manager and tell her that I really need to leave at 11am at latest because my toddler is sick (my mom wfh so she said she could watch him until I can get someone to cover my shift)

I’ve only called in one other time in the last 6 months and that was for my toddler being sick.

My manager could tell that I had just got done crying, she asked if I was okay and I told her that I’m just so upset because I don’t know how to help my child. I don’t know what to do about these ear infections that my toddler is getting. And now he isn’t wanting to drink his milk which scares me.
At 8am my charge nurse comes up to me and tells me that she’s taking over my patients that way I can go be with my baby. I give her report and tell her thank you. I go see my manager to tell her I’m leaving and she gives me a hug and tells me to go take care of my son.

I just wanted to share this because not all managers are horrible. And if you’re in a situation where your manager gives you grief about calling in, find a new job.

Advice - ear infections

Ear tubes

My little boy is 22 months old. Has had at least 10+ ear infections since he has been born. Got ear tubes with ENT 3 weeks ago. Yesterday we noticed he was getting a runny nose (usually means a nasty ear infection is to follow). Sure enough my husband texts me today saying our toddler has a low grade fever. But no drainage from either ears that we can see??
I got home from work (I’m a nurse, didn’t get home until 8pm) took my toddlers temp and it’s 102. Hes not wanting to eat or take a sippy cup.
I’m so beside myself. I thought tubes were supposed to reduce ear infections?? I don’t even know what to do. I gave him Tylenol and used the antibiotic ear drops the ENT gave us after surgery.
My LO has developed a pretty severe speech delay due to the ear infections. He really only says about 3 words. And that’s only sometimes.
I can’t get into see the ENT for 3 days. Should I go ahead and take my LO to see the regular pediatrician?

How did you know you wanted another baby?

I have a 20 month old son. He is the light of my life and I am so grateful to have him. With that being said, toddlerhood has kicked my butt. To the point where I’m questioning whether or not I want to have another baby.

My toddler has had on and off chronic ear infections basically since he was born. We just got tubes placed in his ears yesterday. He has a speech delay because of it. It basically sounds like he’s speaking in minion most of the time. He gets very frustrated and throws tantrums because he can’t communicate with us. Last week we went to Florida and honestly most of the time it was miserable. My toddler was throwing fits every 5 minutes. He would just scream and pull my hair if he didn’t get what he wanted.

My toddler was a very easy baby. Slept through the night at 4 months. Breastfed very easily, hardly ever cried. People would tell me how easy of a baby he was. Now it’s very difficult with him, i can’t even change his diaper without him throwing a fit. Getting him dressed is like going to war, getting him in and out of the car seat is horrible, almost everything ends up in him crying.

I always wanted 2 children, but it honestly has been so hard recently with my son that I don’t know if another one is a good idea so soon.

Antibiotic didn’t help my toddlers ear infection

Hi, I have a 20 month old toddler and he has had recurrent ear infections for as long as I can remember. We finally got a consult to an ENT doctor next week but I am feeling so defeated. My toddler got a double ear infection 10 days ago, we finished the antibiotics and went to our regular pediatrician to get his ears rechecked to make sure the infection had resolved. It had not, she said that his ears still look very infected.

I feel awful, I am worried now that my toddler has been on too many antibiotics and he’s become resistant to them. She put him on Augmentin and said that it will make him have pretty bad diarrhea. I feel so bad for him. He just got done taking Cefdinir and that worked it the past but I don’t understand why it didn’t help this time.

Precepting

Hi, I have been a nurse for a little over a year and a half and was told in February that I was going to precept a new grad. I was honestly excited because I love to have students and really enjoy teaching. It was going really well for the last 3 months, the girl the I’m training is very smart and we get along very well. We have became good friends.

About two days ago, the charge nurse came up to me and told me that I am helping my new grad too much and that I need to let her “drown”. This charge nurse told me that the last time she trained a new grad that she let them “drown” and that they ended up getting so overwhelmed they cried. I couldn’t believe that she was so proud to say that a new grad had cried because of her.

On our floor it is a very busy med surg floor and we take 5 patients. I was honestly shocked when she said that to me, I have been letting my new grad do everything as long I am confident that she can do it. She has been handling everything fine, but she does need help here and there.
But my new grad has only administered blood 1 time. So the other day I was going to watch her administer the blood and be there if she has any questions. My charge nurse stopped me in the hall and was like “what are you doing??? Stop helping her!!” And she grabbed the bag of blood and went to hang the blood with my new grad.

She went on the pull me into the office and told me that I am not allowing my new grad to “critically think” and that I’m doing too much for her. Well yesterday our manager came up to me and told me that my new grad is going to have a new preceptor for the remaining of her orientation. No mistakes has happened within the last 3 months of me training this new grad nurse so I am confused why they are switching her preceptor. The new grad I’m training was very upset and went to our manager and asked why she wasn’t able to train with me anymore. She gave her the same excuse of “you aren’t critically thinking”. The new grad asked if our manager could give an example of when she wasn’t critically thinking and our manager couldn’t bring up an example.

I feel disrespected because this charge nurse has been work friends with me since I was a new grad, we always have a good time at work talking about our family and life outside of work. I feel like she went behind my back without even talking to me about her concerns. I worry that I look incompetent now to my manager even though I did nothing wrong. I’m going to keep my head down and just go to work without talking unless I have to. Yesterday before leaving work this charge came up to me and tried talk to me acting like nothing was wrong, like we were still good friends. I couldn’t believe it. I like the people I work with but this honestly really upset me. Idk what to do.
