I'm painting every classic Doom monster in acrylics. Here is my Lost Soul

Once again, thank you all for the amazing response and appreciation for my artwork. It’s a absolute pleasure to showcase them here in r/doom, and it's so cool to see so many passionate Doom enthusiasts.

This is my translation of the Lost Soul. He got a bit grimmer in his expression than the original pixels, but I really like how he turned out. I tried to give the skull some real texture – adding small pores, dents, and cracks to make the bone look worn and ancient. The original pixels are amazing but quite smooth. I like to think that a burning demon skull would bear some marks and scratches from hell. I actually tried to make the bone smooth at first, but it just ended up looking like burning plastic. So, I built up the textures layer by layer with acrylic paint until I hit this result. I also experimented with painting human-like teeth initially, but it looked incredibly weird and didn't feel like a proper translation of the pixel soul at all. Instead, I gave him these gnarly, spiked teeth to preserve that iconic original look.

While the background doesn't refer to one specific place, my mind always wanders to maps like Slough of Despair, Pandemonium, or Perfect Hatred when looking at it.

I named this artwork “Stalking Terror” – a nod to their terrifying, aggressive behavior in-game. Especially if you play with “fast monsters” enabled! Stalking Terror is part of my trio collection “The Bone Archive”, which goes along with my Arch-Vile and Revenant pieces.

Hope you guys like it!

I’m painting every classic Doom monster in acrylics. Here is my Arch Vile

The response to my cacodemon yesterday was unreal. Thank you everyone, so so much. It’s very appreciated! Sharing my art with you has been a pleasure.

Here is my Arch Vile. This one is one of my first pieces. I think I painted this one back in February or in late January. I had not yet conceptualized my art properly – in the manner of referencing a certain place or map with a sky and buildings. (Note: This is a web-optimized, lower-res file for preview)

This piece tries instead to capture the intellectual and yet haunting vibe that I felt as a kid when entering the map “Circle of death” or “The monster condo”. The warm wooden brown, ochre, depressed greens and the slight of reds are to reference the areas in Doom where you are walking around in a library and getting the sense of something that is smarter than you are watching. I think Doom really hit nail on the head with that uneasiness when you walked among the bookshelves, looking for a key or switch. Yeah, I know – there are no bookshelves in the area where the Arch Vile is to be found at Circle of death, but there are these wooden panels and torches that I think gives the same type of warmth, calmness yet uneasiness to the atmosphere in where he suddenly pops up like a bleak awful snake, burning you to death. I like the result, looks like some kind of religious icon of unholiness from the 1700’s.

As I said in my cyberdemon-post; I have only three monsters left to paint. Those are: the shotgun zombie, the imp and the regular zombie guy. I’m working on them. But it takes time. I can’t even start to guess how many hours I have spent on the other monsters – but man it has been so passionate and educational for me and still are. When I’m done with all the monsters, I will start to focus more on wall textures, switches, weapons and maybe pickups. I have done three wall textures and one switch (the one with red and green light bulb, it’s pretty cool and industrial).

And for those who wants my art on their walls – thank you! That’s a super fine compliment. I made it possible just a while back to print them, giclée fine art style. Check my profile to access my social links if you are interested. Have not yet released all my work though, only the Cacodemon, the Baron of hell and Pinky demon. I’m completely fresh with getting my art out in the world and I’m starting slow. Thanks again everyone!

Cheers from Sweden!

I’m painting every classic Doom monster in acrylics. Here is my Cacodemon

I just want to start by saying a massive thank you to everyone for the incredible response to my Cyberdemon yesterday! – it honestly means the world to a small independent artist like me. Thank you!

I was requested to show more of my work, my Cacodemon specifically. So here it is!

It is the first official piece from my finished collection. I named the artwork "Whisperer of Deimos" to give the Cacodemon a salute to its hissing sound and where you first encounter him in classic Doom.

For this piece I tried to capture the surroundings at the level “Mt. Erebus” from Doom 1. The fireblu buildings, the lava, moss covered temples and deep red sky with black mountains gives this painting a real color-shock with the Caco in the center. I remember when I was a kid and played Doom on my dads Amiga, how strange, vibrant and alien I thought the map looked. Mt. Erebus house a lot of Cacodemons, so I figured that it’s a good choice for the Cacos background to capture a retrospective.

It's fully hand-painted in traditional acrylics and then scanned. When digitizing my work, I make some enhancements to make it look as close to the original painting as possible (due to color loss and other stuff when scanning).
