Obsession has hit Digital & now seems to be getting the “Normie Masterpiece” treatment, Lets talk about the term?
I posted in the questions thread last week (and got downvoted) asking what specifically makes Obsession any less of a “Normie Masterpiece” than a movie like Sinners. I wasn’t trying to come at Obsession at all, rather interrogate what makes a “normie mastapeece” because I think Obsession on paper fits most of that criteria (outgrossed starwars, taken over the internet, simple premise, etc) so it could be a good example of showing how annoying or hollow the critique feels when its about something you actually love (I loved Sinners too and so coining the term in that episode while funny was always a bit frustrating).
Anyways, while I might not be coming at Obsession for “being a normie movie” it appears the contrarians of FilmTwt have (as they do when any movie hits digital). First image I posted is a fair critique but specifically calls it basic / for dumb normies. The second image I posted is someone making a whole Letterboxd list of mainstream trash + Obsession #1 just for the joke to be that someone who has shit normie taste would love Obsession. These are just two from yesterday & while they don’t use the N.M. words directly, I certainly feel the criticism has arrived & think this is a good time to actually define the term on our end!
