I just don't quite understand

I did the survey and want to simply clarify my question because it confounds me.

Ok, I get people like Doolittle, whoever this is, who can hold 10, 8 watts for a long time. They're someone super strong and I've seen them on rides and leader boards, so I get it. Mysterious power person.

But what I don't quite get is when someone on a regular trainer in a ride (no indication it's a non smart trainer or workout) can for less wattage go quite a bit faster than I am going.

Example from this week, both riders, me and someone else are on a TT bike. I assume pir bikes are the best and we've probably both chosen bikes/wheels based on that online comparison chart. Now they may weigh more than me, I get that and in real life On a downhill I have to pedal my ass off to keep up with heavier guys in real life, and so I get this when this also happens on Rouvy, which it did. (I do wonder how much Rouvy compensates for heavier riders and if that matches real life).

However, on the flats they are pushing out half my wattage and going quite a bit faster. On hills they continue to put out less wattage and stay ahead. I mean huh? If they're heavier that won't work. If they are significantly lighter and they'd be pretty small to be lighter than me, they wouldn't have the downhill speed, theoretically. Something's not adding up.

I have a Kickr that automatically adjusts and does not need a spindown.

What could be causing such a difference? I don't really care, I ride for myself but I am curious.

Misc. simple questions

If you click the button to hide other users in a ride, do they still see your avatar?

If you're watching someone ride (using the eye button, you are not riding) and you type "great work" for example, do they see your comment?

Do only accepted friends see your comments?

Quigley's Puzzle was a wonderful mess today

re: Brendan Emmett Quigley puzzle, June 25. The theme was "Going too Far" and I won't say any more about it but it did take a bit of real puzzling to get it all figured out, in addition to a few names I had to look up.

Thoroughly enjoyable however with all the fun weirdness.

General meeting with big agent yesterday

This was a Q and A with a big agent and a few authors. I thought I'd offer one bit of "what was said" as advice is probably always of interest to writers here. One author, serious writer, great person, at the discussion asked about getting stories published. The agent said the entire world-wide infrastructure for stories has collapsed. Mainly this is due to no money and agencies can't justify their involvement from a simply profit angle. One agency they agent used to work at in NYC had an agent dedicated only to short stories. That position was abolished about two years ago. And they said that it is worthless for newer authors to apply to The New Yorker (and I was surprised given all their whoop dee doo about everyone should apply, and what was stated on an AMA here a while ago). They agent's view was that the magazine only publishes stories by big names except for that maybe once every five years story that sets the world on fire. (I doubt such things really exist anymore.} The agent said the best thing for short story writers is to submit around, but not to expect getting work in a big name magazine until you've published one or two great selling, lots of press, respected books. Sobering stuff for that author, and the rest of us, I'm sure.

My secret Rouvy wish, big rides

I wish Rouvy would do something like an end to end country, much like LEJOG (or one major city to another) with like 100k a day, each day picking up where the previous one left off, so that we could do a big challenge, not as a "challenge" with a time limit but one that we could either do day after day in sequence or on our own schedule. I'd love to ride such a thing.

A1C t2 diabetes with endurance athletes

Endurance athletes having a higher A1C has been getting a good deal of press lately. There are loads of articles with a quick search. So, I can read about the reasons why A1C is sometimes not as perfect as may be thought, and that athletes can have higher A1C numbers.

But my question is, as an endurance athlete, if my A1C is higher due to the reasons caused by the athleticism, what's this mean in real terms. Is it simply a high A1C or is it artificially elevated over what it may "really" be due to the athleticism? is the number the number no matter what and I should be treated for that number? Hopefully the smarties here know what I mean with this question. If the answer is it could be artificially elevated, what would be the corollary test to try to get a more accurate number?

I found a book of his stories for cheap so I grabbed it and started reading. Maybe I've read one a long time ago, not sure. But I've not read enough of him so far to make any real judgement.

Is there anyone here who can enlighten me a bit about how the stories are generally considered these days? Have they lasted well? Should I be considering certain things that are his strengths?

My assessment so far, since this is required to post, is that he likes to toss out allusions, the games in Goodbye, My Brother are games of life and life or death; water equates with baptism and so on. It seems he likes to tarry with emotions, although in this one I felt he was holding back a bit in his first person POV. He is wordy in a way that a lot of mid-century writers were wordy, taking his sweet time to develop things. And as the book's preface says, the are of an era, a modernist, nyc, drinking, cigar smoking era that has indeed shifted onward in terms of what the city is now, and what stories are now.

I know I could start searching online, but thought if there's a real fan here I'll get some great info.
