RAC - effectively a scam company

When things go wrong and you’re stuck on the side of the road, the situation can rapidly become very scary and we depend on these well-known recovery services to be reliable; we assume they are.

My girlfriend’s car showed an overheating engine warning. Called RAC and they performed a roadside repair.

After the mechanic left, the warning light came on again. She requested a recovery to her home address. Called at 2000, recovery arrives 0100 aprox. She is at my house so thankfully not stuck on the side of the road.

Recovery takes her 30 minutes down the road to a dark carpark. Drops her off there and another recovery vehicle takes her for the rest of the journey.

The second recovery vehicle never showed up. It is now 0200. She is now in a dark, isolated carpark, alone at night with her broken car. After calling RAC, they inform her the second vehicle is now unavailable.

She had to really fight her corner to arrange a taxi home theough RAC. They told her to leave her car with the keys on the tyre and they will collect at 0700.

She arrives home 0500. Her car does not get collected. The following afternoon, she is getting nowhere with trying to get RAC to bring the car back to hers. Numerous times they said it was on the way, it wasn’t.

It has now been collected by another third party recovery company and is in their yard. They are uncontactable, RAC says her car will be delivered to her house within the next 1-4 days.
