Research student → Master's? How does the process work?

I'm planning to become a research student at a Japanese university, but I'm a bit confused about what happens after that.
From what I understand, being a research student isn't the same as being enrolled in a master's program. During that time, I'll work with a professor, attend seminars, and prepare for the master's entrance exam.
What I'm wondering is:
What is the typical path from research student to master's student?
Do I have to take an entrance exam even if I'm already a research student?
How long does it usually take to transition?
Any advice or things you wish you had known before becoming a research student?
I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this process. Thanks!

Passed MEXT Embassy Recommendation interview — confused about contacting professors and LOA timing

Hi, I passed the MEXT Research Student interview and already read the wiki and past posts, but still unclear on a couple of things.
I’ve already found professors whose research matches mine and drafted my intro email. My questions:
1. Should I contact professors now or wait for the official embassy recommendation letter first?
2. When emailing, should I attach my full research proposal or just a short summary?
3. How long did it take for professors to respond about the LOA?
Just looking for experiences from people who’ve been through this. Thanks!
