My dad had surgery Monday

My father (65) just had knee replacement surgery on Monday. The plan was to bring him home today, but that’s not going to happen. When I spoke to him later in the day Monday, he mentioned how the pain was so bad in his knee as well as the anesthesia shot that he got in the back. He was maxed out on pain meds.
The nurse told me today that he doesn’t want to do rehab (which I really know he should). They’re going to see how he’s doing tomorrow and maybe he can come home. I have questions like has anyone else on here had a set back like this? Did the pain get better on day 3? Or when? Did your anesthesia shot hurt after you woke up? How long did it last?
I’m sure I’ll have a chance to speak to someone when I get him, but if anyone has any advice on taking care of him and how to help with his pain I would greatly appreciate it. I’m just wondering how abnormal this is, since he shouldn’t be in pain to that extent.
