What is this weeks success for you?
How are things going? What is the thing that you achieved this week that counted as a real win?
I was very happy to sit and eat a meal in a dining chair at a table!
The Wait
55f, LTKR 3/12 and RTKR 6/4. Driving me nuts that it’s so beautiful out and I can’t get in the pool! It’s pretty much the tiny scab at the top of the right incision that’s holding me back. At both top and bottom there are single long flapping threads coming out of the skin that have yet to dissolve, and I think that’s why it’s being slow to heal in that tiny spot. I have my post-op visit Wednesday, and hopefully they’ll take them out and tell me it’s fine to get in then.
The water is so beautiful, and feels lovely on my toes, but I’m only letting it up to my ankles. No broken skin down there!
In other news - the other day I posted about being nervous about going outside because of bees, mosquitoes, etc. And the world in general, after so long spent basically housebound due to arthritis pain. Just wanted to share that I’ve been out at the pool now for over an hour, and in shorts even! It’s great to be out here looking at the gorgeous blue water and the bright orange day lilies (and all the scraggly weeds I’m not weeding… :D )
MRI pre TKR?
Did anyone have an MRI before TKR? I haven't as x-rays show advanced/severe arthritis. But what happens if I have a torn ACL or other ligament issues when he gets in there? Should I ask for an MRI?
Any athletes out there with a TKR?
I’m 61 F, I do heavy weight lifting with a strength coach twice a week and I row on the water and on the erg in the winter. I’m also really active overall - hiking, biking, etc. everything but running and skiing which destroyed my knees.
I got an ACL repair on my left knee a decade ago and a partial replacement on my right knee 4 years ago. Now my left knee is bone-on-bone and even though it’s not debilitating (yet) I decided to get it replaced this fall, rather than wait for it to progress even further.
My question is for anyone out there who is really active and strong who has had a replacement - how did it go and how long before you could get back to your sports? So many of the people posting here have horror stories about being 6 months out and still in pain, etc. I know a PTR is easier than a TKR, but after my PTR, I never took opioids, I was walking with cane by day 2 and within about 2 months I felt pretty good. I think I only went to PT a few times because I just didn’t need it anymore - I could do it all on my own.
I’m much stronger and not as damaged going into this TKR as I was with the partial, so I’m hoping for a similar outcome, but I don’t want to fool myself. So tell me how it went for you athletes out there!
1 month post op
I had bilateral knee replacement last month and boy it sure has been a journey! Recovery is definitely not linear. I’ve had good and bad days and I’ve had good and bad PT sessions. It’s so important to go to all the appointments and try your best while you’re there. It’s also important to let your therapist know when you are having a painful day so they can be a gentle with you. Ice packs are my best friend. I go back to work in August (teacher) and I think I’ll be physically able to tackle work when the time comes. There’s still a long way to go before I reach full recovery, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and I’m excited for my future
Does knee replacement recovery depend on a perfectly functioning shoulder?
I need to have knee replacement due to bone-on-bone osteoarthritis and bone spurs. I was scheduled last fall, but cancelled (partically due to health issues and partially because I just felt like it wasn't yet needed). Since then, the pain has gotten worse. I still manage fine day-to-day, can do stairs and walk short distances, but I'm having more flares and I really can't plan to walk more than a mile or so without pain. I also have a limp, a bowed leg, and now my ankle is collapsing (seeing a doc for that next month). All leg issues stem from a bad fracture 40 years ago. Anyway, now I have developed avascular necrosis in my shoulder from another fracture three years ago. The humeral head has collapsed so it looks terrible on MRI but doesn't cause me much pain yet. So my question, for those who have already had knee replacement surgery, is could you have managed your recovery with a mildly compromised shoulder? Did you find you needed a walker for full support after surgery, or could you put weight on your operated leg? I'd like to do knee replacement first since shoulder replacement can be postponed when I have more symtoms, but I don't know if that's wise.
Infection
TKR 5 weeks ago. The small incision above knee used as "guide" was closed up but is now super red and an inch and a half hard lump underneath. Infection?
What should I do?
Anyone using Gummies
Friend gets 10mg on prescription. Used one last night. I'm 17 days post surgery first 6 plus hours sleep I've had
How long after your RTKR were you able to drive?
I'm looking at an RTKR this fall. It's likely my wife needs to travel out of town two weeks after my surgery. Wondering if I'll be able to drive myself to PT at that time. TIA.
PT, pain advice
Hail my heroes !
Had my replacement monday been doing 1.5 hours per day pt. Only take one oxi 5mg per day before pt.
Last night was the worst night so far, probably cause the last of the nerve block is now gone. Today I can barely move my knee, took oxi and though still pain is gone, movement pain persists.
My real question :
Do you still force yourself the pt? ( bike, extension and bending ) on days like this, or do you take a day off ?
Well, that was a little pricey!
Just over 11 weeks post-op. I’ve been doing outpatient PT twice a week for maybe the last nine weeks. At the end of each session, the therapist asked if I would like an ice pack on my knee before I leave, and I say yes if I’m not going straight home. Today I started wondering about not having gotten a bill for my PT, went online, and discovered a big rolling bill that I guess won’t drop until after I’m done on Monday; it listed five “Pt Hot/Cold Pk Therapist/Pta Only” at $30 each. Yes, most of it is going to be covered by insurance, but still…
Camino de Santiago, part 2
I did it. Finished up two days ago and was thrilled. Completed most of the walk from Tui to Santiago - I had to do a late start and meet up with the group on the last day due to stomach issues but i met them before the hills and still did over 100km in total.
The knees held up great - mine are 15 and 11 months old. Some stiffness when i get up but not bad. Hills were killers but that's because of cardio. Fortunately we missed the hottest days - only our last was really bad.
I'm posting this again to let people know there is light at the end of the tunnel. It was a lot of work to get here. I even bought little gifts for my ortho and PT because i couldn't do it without them.
9 weeks PO - what PT are you doing?
I had home PT for 4 visits. She left me with about 5 or 6 exercises that she said was enough
Heel slides
On chair, bend knee as far as possible
Bike 10-15 minutes
Leg lifts
Operated knee - Foot on 2nd step and lean forward and way back
On bed push knee down to get to 0%
Walking is tough for long as I need surgery on a hernia and walking aggravates it
At $150 hour for PT and retired, I’d like to get my own routine
What std exercises do you do ?
I’m 70F and 9 weeks PO
ROM At 120 2 weeks ago
Aching hip
Anyone else have their hip ache after their knee replacement? Mine has been really bothersome the last day or so. I’ve had this happen when I sit (usually in the car) for too long. I’m confident that’s what’s causing the ache, but I’m really tired of it. Kept me up half the night last night. Could NOT find a comfortable position. I get up and walk around the house almost every hour. Might try talking a bit longer walk outside today and see if that helps. Might try the massage gun too.
Ace bandage post op
I see lots of post op pictures with full length ace bandage wrap. Are these for compression? How long does it stay on? Do you wear compression socks as well?
I am considering renting a NICE cooling/compression machine for a couple of weeks post op. A NICE competitor claims the NICE machine can’t penetrate bulky post op bandages and wraps, but most of those who have used it swear by them.
Bicruciate retaining implant
The one on the left. Five months after my surgery. Notice the absence of a stem. It is my understanding that a stem is not there because of the existence of the ACL And PCL in the space so the attachment methodology is very different. But I still have all my ligaments. I don't know if there is a causal relationship but I had no post surgery pain.
Let's talk bruising..
This was 5 days after TLKR admittedly I bruise easy. Relatively young to have it done in terms of doctors opinion, 46. Have had Crohns and arthritis since 8 so only a matter of time TBH. Anyone also a brusier lol.
Humidity?
I'm on vacation this week at a big old beach house - it's always humid here in the summer and it's even worse right now after a couple storms. Ever since I got here, I feel like I've been set so far back! I'm at about 12 weeks and have been at about 0/120 ROM for a while... but I swear I can barely get it past 90 here. Is the humidity the problem? Does anyone else stiffen way up when it's humid?
Why does my knee hurt more st night?
I am nearly 11 weeks post-surgery. When I am up and walking or even sitting, my knee barely hurts. But when I am lying in bed, it feels hot and tight (like a tight band around it), and the nerve zingers start. I'm also more aware of the numbness in my lower leg when I am in bed. I can sleep all right if I put a soft pillow between my legs with the surgery leg on top. But these symptoms are no fun, and I'm anxious for them to go away? Will they?
