No infection before but what about after?

I delayed my surgery, due next month, because of a dental infection that’s been clinging on for a year and a half. As having an infection beforehand is a major issue what about a getting one afterwards? It seems that you’d have movement and can get out and about but must live like a hermit anyway. What’s the deal here?

Waiter too keen to take my non-empty plate.

In a café eating breakfast. Took a mouthful of food, still chewing. I’m even holding the fork still. There’s another bite left on the plate. A waiter asked “are you finished” and moved to take the plate. I like that she’s keen to do her job but - timing please.

Who to hire to move one item 60km in a van

I own a tiny hatchback and can’t pick up the used recliner chair I am buying. I may use Two Men and a Van. I’ve noticed there are a number of Gold Coast peeps offering that service. Recommendations please.

Are you given antibiotics for surgery?

I read in another thread about scratches you’d be given lots of antibiotics before/after surgery. Is that a given? I ask as I’m stressed about an oral infection. I see my doctor tomorrow. I don’t want to take more antibiotics now if I get them for surgery anyway.
I do have a Telehealth appointment with the surgeon on Thursday. I’d like to know for tomorrow.

Do hospitals accept your own ice machine?

I’m having it done at an Australian public hospital, GCUH, next month. I was just told by a woman who went privately ice machines aren’t used in hospitals. They only give you plastic bags of ice that soon melt. Will the hospital accept it if I take an ice machine in there? I think I’ll splash out and rent a NICE machine for the first two weeks. I don’t want to pay that price if I can’t actually use it for a few days.

Notice given by GCUH?

I’m on the wait list for a major surgery within two months. How much notice would I be given? Would it be weeks or will I get a call saying to be there tomorrow?

Compression socks and footwear

I’m wanting to be well organised for my surgery given I have no minions to run around for me afterwards. Should I buy compression socks now or wait till after the surgery to be measured for them? Would the hospital or home nurses supply them?

I have balance issues so I wear solid trainers/running shoes with custom orthotics. I’m sure they’ll be difficult as it’s an effort to don and lace them anyway. I can’t wear loose shoes such as slippers. I hope after this surgery my body will be lined up again and it won’t matter. For peace of mind though I want secure shoes. Suggestions please.

NICE machine, CPM machine or both?

Is it realistic to rent both machines and rotate between them? I’m in Australia and paying out of pocket, so the extra cost would need to be justified. This surgery may well be the one thing this 60-year-old finally does properly.
Realistically how long would I need them for? Two weeks? Six weeks? A few months?

Should I retrieve my recliner chair from the garage?

I know sleeping will be an issue. I’ll struggle as I’m a tummy sleeper. I read somewhere about sleeping on a recliner chair. I’ve never used mine in the 14 years I’ve lived here as it’s too bulky for my tiny home. Should I get it out for the post surgery period?

Cryotherapy machine or compression wrap

How long are the leads in these machines? I imagine I’ll be spending lots of time laying on my couch. Could I do that or can I only use these machines when sitting? Is it recommended you raise your leg or not? Also my lounge room is tiny. I guarantee I’ll struggle with space for a machine.
These compression wraps which you put ice sheets into are a) cheaper and b) portable. Would portable be important as I don’t go out for more than two hours anyway? I know you ice your knee for 20-30 minutes at a time. How long a break do you then take? They do have great reviews. Has anyone here tried them? Should I maybe get both?
Let’s guess who’s as nervous as all hell.

Fear of infection

I have a kr in October. So excited. A year ago I had an oral infection. Only on the last day of the second course of antibiotics did it stop hurting. I know it didn’t completely go away completely. The dentist said that’s always the case with oral infections. My mouth doesn’t hurt but for months I’ve felt a ‘twinge’. The doctor has given me another course of antibiotics and said he’ll prescribe more close to the time. So my body will be carrying some infection at the time of surgery. How scared should I be?

Who can remove a tight finger ring for me?

Apologies for the size of the photo. I don’t know how to make them smaller.
I wear a cheap poor quality ring. I am slightly allergic to that metal as you can see by little spot below it. I’ve put on weight and can’t remove it. I am due for knee replacement surgery in October. Infection is such a concern they’d cancel the surgery because of that little spot. Who do I see for help with this?
I’ve seen a video of a ring being removed by putting a piece metal behind it then using a circular saw to cut through it. Could anyone help me there? If you have a saw but aren’t comfortable doing it I’d bring a trusted family member to do it if need be. My dad is a retired RAAF aircraft mechanic so I have complete faith.
Do you know who I’d see?

How much help would I need?

I’ve been accepted for LTKR probably in October. I’m a sad little unit so I live alone, have no friends nearby and few family. I’m in Australia and as it’s generally not needed here I have no health insurance. Thankfully I get a little government help being officially disabled. I’ll need to work it so I have sufficient help around the time of the surgery. For now I have help four mornings a week. Would that be enough given I’ll need to deal with icing my leg, cooking and eating, feeding pets etc?
Stairs: My home has five steps to the front porch. Will I manage that straight away?
Physio: Could I get out of home to be driven to my physio or should I book home appointments for a few weeks?
Showering: How long before you can do that?

Why are moustaches trendy again?

Being of ‘certain age’ to me moustaches are a very seventies, usually porn star, trend. I don’t recall seeing them for many years but now every young bloke at my local coffee shop has one. Why? What am I missing? I am female and do not mind full beards but a lone moustache on your face seems … odd.

Movement after knee replacement?

I’ve just been approved for a knee replacement.
I’m 60, and a few months ago my back flared up badly. It isn’t something that’s going to improve. On a few of the worst days I couldn’t even get out of bed, and I had to have a carer let themselves in with my spare key to help me up.
On my better days I mostly get around with a walker, which I originally got because of my knee.
I’m definitely going ahead with the surgery, but I’m wondering whether already having such poor mobility, along with a permanent back problem, will make recovery harder. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What should I realistically expect?

Turns out the NIMBY’s in Palm Beach had a point.

I’ve always been behind the Gold Coast light rail but … Mayor Tom Tate has taken it upon himself to permanently close Burleigh Heads library which is right by the light rail station due to be in action days later. He has said that site may become a transport hub. While council has already decimated the Palm Beach library who knows what else they had in mind? This shows they can’t be trusted. So Palm Beach people - good for you for fighting the light rail.

For the first time in years someone made me think “wow”.

I had a weird moment today. I’m an older straight woman, but the young woman serving me in a shop completely caught my attention. She’d be mid-20s and wasn’t conventionally beautiful, but there was just something about her. Her look, her confidence, her attitude…
Obviously nothing would ever happen. I’m straight, decades older, and so out of practice at flirting that I wouldn’t know where to begin anyway. I realised that if I were much younger I’d absolutely have been tempted to hit on her. It wasn’t about her looks as much as the energy she gave off.
Has anyone else ever been unexpectedly floored by someone’s sheer presence rather than their conventional attractiveness?

A newer Melbourne suburb with a bogan reputation?

Context: I live in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast. My disabled body is getting worse, so I need to find a more accessible home. Burleigh is an older suburb, so there aren’t many modern, accessible properties.
People keep suggesting I move to Logan because the homes are generally newer, bigger and more suitable. Fair enough but to me that’s like telling someone to move from St Kilda, where I grew up and love, to… where? Dandenong? Frankston? Werribee? Those are the suburbs that spring to mind, but they’re all older too, so it’s not quite the same comparison.
What’s the best Melbourne equivalent of being told to leave trendy, beachside St Kilda for a newer, more affordable outer suburb that most people wouldn’t choose to live in?

Do holiday homes still exist here?

Some teens I know are off investigating ‘abandoned’ houses. I told them that traditionally people owned holiday homes here. Seems far more likely than these homes belong abandoned. Are holiday homes still a thing or are they too ridiculously expensive now?

Driving instructor for older person?

I’m 60 and did get my license as a teen. I didn’t drive for many years and am confused now with a newer car. I want just one lesson to focus on parking and reversing. Who knows of a driving school who are used to dealing with older learners?
