my late shadow
tiger would walk down the stairs like a little, orange percussionist — stopping to drum the spindles as his steady melody pulsed across the banister.
only a few years ago, he was a large, orange percussionist. so large that his jumping into my bed at night flashed my mind with scenes of wars i’d never fought. he’d rub his forehead on my chin like a furry field medic administering a satin syrette.
as his fur straggled and his fat began to wane, he developed a deepness in his eyes. suddenly the lone cat could never be alone. he wished to climb my shoulders, to sleep between my eyes, to wear me as pajamas, to be right where I was.
he was relentless and teeming with love.
I miss him to death
