My kids and I were bug hunting yesterday and found three praying mantises. This one had a strange brown thing attached or coming out of the side of its body. Is it a parasitid fly? Something else?
I bought this pan at a thrift store. I've bought new and used cast iron but this one worries me and I'd like some second opinions to confirm or deny my suspicions for future reference please.
The first 2 pictures are post first cleaning (just soap and water). It's less red and rusty in this picture than it was when I first picked it up but there was a small piece of hard metal that wouldn't come off despite scrubbing with metal. I scrubbed it down again today and noticed even more of these hard, stubborn metal pieces. I've bought cheap cast iron from the dollar store before, one of which had a rough metal imperfection akin to this before, but scrubbing the pan with metal scrubbed the bit off and it smoothed out. That's not happening here and I'm wondering if it's lead slag.
It doesn't appear to be a very old pan (which is what i associate with lead melting) since its marked "CHINA." I'm not comfortable with using it for cooking, so I won't, but I'd love to hear others' takes. Thanks!
And if they are, how can I find the particular copy they would be trying to bookjack (since it seems like a more reasonable charge)?
This was my first time using abebooks, and perhaps I should have realized it was too good to be true because there were no pictures of said book and the asking was pretty decent for an OOP book.
Does anyone know if or when these two kinds of pieces will make their way into Canadian Ikeas?
