I pretended to understand a joke for way too long

I have a confession that still makes me cringe.

A coworker made a joke during lunch, and everyone started laughing. I didn't understand it at all, but I laughed too because I didn't want to be the only person sitting there looking confused.

Then someone looked at me and said, “You got it, right?”

I confidently said, “Of course.

That was my mistake.

They started explaining the joke to me, and somehow the explanation made even less sense. I just kept nodding like I was following along.

Five minutes later, I was still pretending to understand.

The worst part? Someone made the same joke again a week later, and I laughed automatically.

My coworker looked at me and said, “You still don't get it, do you?

I absolutely did not.

I was home alone when I heard my mom call my name from upstairs.

“Sweetie? Can you come up here for a second?”

I froze.

My mom had left about twenty minutes earlier to pick up groceries.

I shouted back, “What?”

“I need your help.”

Her voice sounded exactly like hers.

I started walking toward the stairs, but then my phone buzzed.

It was a text from Mom.

Mom: I’m at the store. Do you need anything?

I stared at the message.

Then I heard her voice again from upstairs.

“Why did you stop?”

I didn't answer.

I quietly locked the front door and called my mom.

She picked up immediately.

“Hey, what's wrong?”

I whispered, “Are you home?”

There was a pause.

“No. Why?”

Before I could respond, something upstairs started walking toward the staircase.

Slowly.

One step.

Then another.

My mom heard it through the phone.

“What was that?”

I didn't answer.

The footsteps stopped at the top of the stairs.

Then a voice whispered:

“Sweetie... why are you talking to Mom on the phone?”

I ran outside and stayed in the neighbor's house until my mom came back with the police.

They searched the entire house.

Nobody was there.

Nothing was missing.

But when the police checked the upstairs hallway, they found something that still makes my stomach turn.

There were wet footprints leading from my bedroom...

to the staircase.

And they were the same size as mine.

The police asked me if I'd been upstairs earlier.

I said no.

Then my mom looked at me strangely.

“What?”

She pointed toward the footprints.

“There are two sets.”

I looked closer.

One set was going upstairs.

The other was coming down.

Neither set was facing the way I expected.
