Would working as an H&R Block tax preparer be a good entry point into accounting?
I’m trying to transition into accounting, and I’m wondering whether starting as a tax preparer at H&R Block would be a worthwhile way to get my foot in the door.
My bachelor’s degree is in an unrelated field, but I’ve since completed an Accounting Certificate through UCLA Extension, including the full Intermediate Accounting sequence, cost accounting, accounting information systems, federal income taxation, ethics, and auditing. I’m working toward meeting the educational requirements for the California CPA and ultimately plan to become a CPA.
The problem I’m running into is getting that first accounting job. I’ve been applying for entry-level accounting positions, but without much on my resumé that screams professional accounting experience, I’m having a hard time getting someone to take a chance on me.
Would doing a tax season at H&R Block be a meaningful first step? Would it seem like legitimate accounting/tax experience that could help me move into a staff accountant, tax associate or similar role afterward?
For those of you who started at H&R Block, especially anyone who eventually moved into public or industry accounting: did it actually help open doors? Did you learn skills that transferred well to your next job?
I’d appreciate any perspective, including from people who think there’s a better way to get that first year of relevant experience. Thanks for your time.
