Southern Virginia University

Before I get into this, I want to provide some context. I recently graduated, class of 2026. I am not a member of the Church, but I have deep respect and love for everything it stands for, everything it has accomplished, and all of the experiences it has given me. The majority of my closest friends are LDS, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything in the world.

With that being said, I want to be very direct: please do not send minority students to this university. Whether you are a family that is part of the Church and happens to be a minority, parents who have adopted minority children, or simply a family of color considering this school, please think carefully before making that decision.

In my experience, minorities here are treated as nothing more than a number, a diversity statistic on a brochure. There is little to no genuine acknowledgment or meaningful engagement directed toward students of minority backgrounds. It often felt as though we were invisible, like we barely existed on campus at all.

What makes this even more frustrating is that neighboring institutions such as Washington & Lee University and Hampden-Sydney College, both of which carry well-documented histories of deeply rooted racial foundations, somehow manage to do a better job of acknowledging and engaging their minority students. That comparison alone should say a lot.

And no, this is not a political statement. I am not coming from a liberal agenda or any agenda at all. This is simply the truth based on lived experience. This university is not an environment where minority students are set up to feel seen, valued, or welcomed. Please be wise and do your research before sending your children here. This school really wants to seem like it’s opening to everyone, but in reality it’s not and that’s what tricked me at the beginning.

Fall internships

I’m currently interning in the house and I’m looking to start applying to fall internships. I’m a recent graduate (may1st) does it boost my chances of securing one?
