How expensive is it to visit a tax professional?

Long story short, I've been unemployed for four years aside from trying to get a business off the ground that didn't work out. I was making between $15-30k per year during this time and did not file (really struggling, please do not judge, I'm taking the steps now to fix this). I've filed my 2025 returns, but I need to go back and do previous years back to 2022, as I've recently made a career change and been verbally offered a job that will check if my taxes have been filed. I also will need to be on a payment plan to get this sorted.

I don't know that this is something I can do on my own, and I think visiting a tax professional makes the most sense, but I'm worried I can't afford this. What are my options?

Thank you!

Back taxes & suitability determination for state gov job

Hi all,

I apologize first of all if this isn't the right place to post this but my research has brought me here so I figured it was worth a shot.

I recently switched careers. For the past 5 years or so, I have been trying to get a personal training business off the ground (self-employed), it never really amounted to much and I largely had to live off of savings and the little I was making during this time. I never made it an LLC. Things started off just making a few hundred bucks here and there through friends I was helping and eventually I made between $15,000-$30,000 per year, not much but it was something. I did not pay income taxes on this during this time (please reserve your judgement, I was really struggling financially but I'm trying to make it right. I'm still struggling financially).

Fast forward to last year, I went back to school. I recently got a verbal offer within my state government, where I will be dealing with social security info and I will need to get a "suitability determination through the Social Security Administration". Based on my research, this will involve getting my tax info checked. My background check will come out clean on everything except this.

Anyone have any advice on making this right? I did file my 2025 taxes last night, but obviously have to pay into that still/set up a payment plan + the other years. I've read similar threads on reddit where people say as long as you can prove you're working toward correcting things, it may be looked past. I am absolutely broke right now and I don't know how payment for tax services works or if that's a viable method.

Thank you.

Verbally offered position w/state gov but receiving no updates

Hi all,

A month ago as of this Friday I was verbally offered an accounting technician position within my state government from one of the women that interviewed me two months prior, the same woman that set up my interview (let’s call her C). Over the phone, C mentioned that they were upgrading my position and trying to offer more money, and that she’d get back to me in a week or two.

Fast forward to last week (3 weeks since receiving verbal offer), I reach out seeing if she has any updates and she tells me that she does and that she’d give me a call the next day (Thursday). I’ve received no call or email from her since then, and I emailed her today following up asking if there was a specific time or day that would work best for her. Sitting here without any updates and/or not hearing from her feels bad seeing as prior email exchanges with her she responded very quickly, I’m wondering if something is up.

I was through the moon last month that my job search had finally ended, and with each passing day I’m getting more anxious. I know that state (and federal) gov positions can take forever during the on boarding process, but not hearing anything back feels bad.

Looking for some advice and/or reassurance as to how to navigate this because it’s been taking up a ton of my mental energy.

Thank you!
