Is ledger board necessary?

Don't be too hard on me. Obviously not a carpenter or I wouldn't be asking what is probably considered a dumb question.
We're building a cabin and it will have a full covered front porch. 8' deep by 40' long.
I'm curious as to why I couldn't attached the porch floor joists directly to the cabin band board (I guess its technically called the rim joist?) with joist hangers? It is a double rim joist.
In my simple mind, the ledger board is just adding weight to the band boards?
Educate me please.

Good deal on impact driver?

Opinions on this?

I have an old 18v Dewalt driver that I bought the adapter to use the 20v lithium ion batteries in. It still works, but when using my buddies newer Dewalt driver I can definitely tell the difference.
