I accidentally drove in the wrong lane for a short time at night — what should I do?
Hi everyone,
I made a serious driving mistake last night and I’m quite shaken by it.
I was driving first time at night on a rural road in the UK. I saw these road markings occasionally that confused me, and according to my navigation I needed to turn right further ahead. Because of that, I mistakenly thought I should move over and stay on the right side. I indicated right and moved into what I thought was the correct lane.
After about a minute or two, I realised I was actually driving on the wrong side of the road. There were no oncoming vehicles directly in front of me, so thankfully there was no accident. There were cars behind me, but as far as I know I did not force anyone into danger. As soon as I realised my mistake, I indicated left and moved back into the correct lane.
I fully understand that this was a very dangerous and serious mistake. I’m not trying to excuse it. I’m posting because I want to understand what I should do now, both legally and practically.
Since there was no collision, no injury, and no damage that I’m aware of, do I need to report this to the police? Should I do anything else?
Any advice would be appreciated. Please be honest, but I already know this was stupid and dangerous
