i was on complete bedrest from March to May bcoz of an accident and in the last 3 months except for hospital visits i barely went out, for most of you going outside and seeing trees.. & nature is just a normal part of life for someone like me who's been isolated and at home since nearly 5 months this was an eventful day :) (not a good sketch ik, drew it in 3mins lol)

First of all I don't have much knowledge about ssds or pc's at all sorry if I say something wrong..
Basically I've been using an hdd since 6 years and now that hdd is not working anymore so I am getting a new SSD
Nvme ssd 256gb ( i can't afford 512 or 1Tb SSD that's why getting 256)
And I have 8gb ram, Ryzen 3250U
The repair guys r charging $45 for the SSD and
They said if I want them to install the OS they will charge $12 for the os install (windows 10 ig)
A friend of mine reccomended me that given my pc specifications I should get a lighter linux
Can you all tell me if i should do the OS installation on my own or let them do it for $12..
And if anyone's used linux can they give me some advice if I should do it or not..?
I've got a SanDisk 128gb pendrive, if that's any useful in installation..
