SSD Pros pleas Help!! Is my SSD Dying??

So I was playing CS2 and the game froze midway... then I had to force shut down laptop cuz nothing was responsive. Then when I rebooted my laptop, Settings popped a warning message from S.M.A.R.T. which further said the following -

Drive Health -
Warning: drive set to read-only
Warning: spare capacity is low
Back up your data in case of drive failure
Estimated remaining life: 99%
Available spare: 23%
Temperature: 51 degree C...

Are there any chances for saving this drive??? If yes please help T_T

Can I just transfer my OS to an SSD?

I'm upgrading from an old HDD to an SSD soon, and I'm a bit confused.

Do I need to clone the entire drive, or can I just transfer Windows to the SSD and leave everything else where it is?

What's the better approach?

Internal SSD vs EXTERNAL SSD for laptop gaming

Hello everyone,

I have a Lenovo Legion gaming laptop with USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, which support speeds up to 10 Gbps (~1250 MB/s max).

I am currently stuck in a dilemma: Internal vs Exrernal SSD?

I primarily want to know if anyone here has tried playing heavy multiplayer games installed on an external SSD with the same speeds as my laptop supports.

Have you faced any stuttering, or performance drops?

Does the 10 Gbps limit noticeably bottleneck loading times compared to an internal drive?

Are there any specific external enclosures or drives you recommend (or suggest avoiding)?

Or should someone go for an Internal SSD instead as it would reach up to 7000 MB/s I think

I also already own an untouched 1 TB external Seagate HDD , should I consider using that instead ?

Any advice or experiences would be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

Repurposing SSDs

I’m assuming I am doing something wrong, I have a couple SSDs that I pulled from a couple older laptops. I was hoping to just use them as portable drives but for some reason I can’t see them in the enclosure to reformat them.

Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

The enclosure is UGREEN M.2 SSD NVMe Enclosure USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps NVMe SSD Adapter M.2 2230 2242 2260 2280

What's a good external SSD for gaming these days?

I've been using an external HDD for my Steam library for years, and it's finally starting to show its age. Older games are still fine, but anything newer takes forever to load, so I think it's time to upgrade.

I started looking at external SSDs, but there are so many options that I honestly have no idea what's actually worth buying. Every review seems to recommend something different.

I'm mainly after something that's reliable and fast enough for playing games directly from it. I don't really care about having the absolute fastest drive if the real-world difference is only a second or two.

What are you guys using? Anything you'd buy again, or anything you'd avoid?

Free disk cloning software?

On a W11 Acer Predator trying to upgrade the factory 500gb C drive SSD to a 1TB SSD one but I used to do it with Clonezilla on a pen drive but I lost it. :( What are the kiddies using now?

Edit: I used DiskGenius which did a copy of files and partitions but I got a feeling it's not bootable...and I'm afraid to restart.

Too tired to try to fix what's broke right now. So its off to bed. lol

Still looking for any advice to pulling this off without bricking my device.

Data retention question, I’m not an expert

Would the built-in custom 2 TB NVMe SSD in Sony’s PS5 Pro be adhering to/ in compliance with JEDEC unpowered SSD data retention standards?

Would it be likely or is it certain? Why?

The SSD is soldered to the motherboard and it’s for a gaming console; I was wondering if this would make it exempt from JEDEC’s standards for some reason and I don’t know too much about SSDs. I’m worrying that my new PS5 Pro’s data or OS could get corrupted cause I haven’t used it yet and it’s been around four months. If you can, I would love some peace of mind that my data is completely intact. Need insight.

Thanks!

Pushing a 16-Year-Old 64GB SSD to 3 Petabytes (It Glitched)

Video also has details on ssd and the odometer pushing passed 3pb

SSD firmware crashes and controller failures are vastly more common than nand wearMy 64gb ssd passed and processing over 3PB, experiment is well better than few weeks ago. I'll keep pushing the controller limit is theoretically 144PB before either it turns into a negative factor, reverts to 0 or freeze and my favorite glitch symbols

Micron 3500 SSD (Crucial T500 OEM version) slow random read/write

Received a 2nd hand Micron 3500 2TB SSD today (this is the OEM version of the Crucial T500). I am a little concerned about the random read and write speeds as they are considerably lower than the review sample from THESSDREVIEW's website (3rd image).

If anybody who owns a Micron 3500 SSD can provide their own results (CrystalDiskMark with setting "NVMe" and profile "default") that would be greatly appreciated.

SATA SSD not showing

I tried to burn windows ISO on this ssd using REFUS, used that sata-usb cable (don’t ask how i got it like this) and it worked fine, it was new, i had to format it in the disk management, but then when I started downloading the iso it suddenly stopped working and showed some errors that I don’t remember. now it doesn’t show on the pc, as if it is dead, it has some light inside that work fine.
Tried to plug the power cable only for 30 min and did that again, nothing.
Is there is any hope to get it back?

How much was your current SSD? Mine was almost $200.

A few days ago I asked here whether it was worth waiting for SSD prices to come down. Most people basically said don't count on it.

My old drive was almost full, so I finally gave in and bought a 1TB Gen4 NVMe SSD for just under $200. As a student, that definitely hurt my wallet a bit, but I needed the extra space.

What did you pay for your current SSD? Did I buy at a terrible time, or is this just what we're all dealing with now?

What was your first SSD? Mine completely changed my setup

I still remember my first SSD like it was yesterday. It was a 240GB SATA drive (Kingston A400), nothing fancy by today's standards, but at the time it felt like a huge upgrade. I was running Windows 10 on a 1TB HDD before that, and boot times were painfully slow, easily over a minute.

After cloning my system to the SSD, the difference was immediate. Boot time dropped to around 15 seconds, apps opened instantly, and even basic tasks felt smoother. I didn't change any other hardware, so it really highlighted how much of a bottleneck the HDD had been.

I also remember being nervous about the cloning process, but it went surprisingly smoothly with free software. Since then, I've upgraded to NVMe drives, but that first SATA SSD was what made me fully appreciate storage performance.

What was your first SSD, and did it impress you as much?

AI Is Rewriting the Rules of RAM

Honestly, this RAM situation looks less like a bad market cycle. It`s more like a new reality. AI companies are buying memory like there is no tomorrow, manufacturers are chasing bigger margins with HBM, and regular users may be left paying more for basic upgrades. Not exactly great news if you were hoping to build a cheaper PC next year.

The wild part is that new capacity may not even save us, because AI demand could eat it up before prices cool down. So maybe the real question is not “when will RAM get cheap again?”
In my opinion, its about “was cheap RAM just a lucky era we took for granted?”

Are these tiny 16TB SSD for real?

My Social Media is full of ads for a 16Tb SSD for under $50, which is a fraction of what I’d pay for a 1TB drive from Western Digital, SeaGate or another well known brand.

Are they for real or is this some scam?

Mac SSD recs

So I have a m4 Mac air 2025 13” with 16gb memory 256gb of storage (I think) and most games I have on steam are upwards of 80gb so I can usually only I have 1 or max 2 installed at the same time. I was wondering if external storage would help with that, I’m sure it would but I’m wondering more about the latency of the games that are stored externally when it’s connected to my Mac and specific storage device recommendations. Preferably not too expensive
also I saw another post saying prices are high? should I be waiting since its nothing too urgent?

and would an HDD be better or an SSD

Many thanks in advance

SSD upgrade on laptop - clone or fresh install?

Hey all,

I’m about to upgrade the SSD in my laptop and can’t decide whether to just clone my current drive or do a clean Windows 11 install.

Cloning seems easier since I can keep everything as it is, but I’m worried I’ll also be bringing over junk and old issues. On the other hand, a fresh install sounds “cleaner”, but also kind of annoying to set up again.

For those who’ve done SSD upgrades recently — what did you go with, and would you do the same again?

Thanks in advance.
