Was the tone shift in PoP: WW that big of a deal back in 2004?

I played the games somewhat in backward order: Two Thrones first in 2007, then Warrior Within and Finally The Sands of Time. It was during my early teens. The sands of time is my favorite.

However, from time to time, I listen to Conflict at Entrance, Two Thrones Main Menu Music, and Tower of Dawn during driving and other activities (the 30 min youtube versions). Recently, I did just that and a lot of warrior content (roughly a year or two old) are being suggested to me in Youtube.

One thing, I noticed is that every video mentions the edgy tone shift of WW.

TBH, when I played the game, I don't remember the tone shifts at all. And, i feel like, a sequel changing substantially from its predecessor was the norm, and seeing the same gameplay and tones in sequel was not an expected thing. Gameplay and tone staying the same is a phenomena of late 2000s and was normalized during 2010s.

That said, was the tone shift that big of a deal back in the day? Most of my friends think WW is the best game in the trilogy. To me it feels like in inconsequential thing, just an anecdote, "Ooooh! Yeah! WW was edgy. Anyway,....", but these youtube videos make me feel like it was a big deal.

Those who lived through that, what was your opinion?
