Should I actually buy a MacBook for university, or should I just stick with my current laptop? (Canada)

I’m from Canada and I’m going to university this fall for my first year of a Bachelor of Science. I’m hoping to go into medicine in the future.

I’ve always wanted a MacBook. Like, genuinely, I’ve wanted one since I was younger, but I never actually got one. Now that I have a part-time job and some money of my own, I’m debating whether I should finally get one.

Around 2020–2021, my parents bought me a brand-new Dell Inspiron for around $1,200–$1,600 (I don’t remember the exact price/specs). It’s now around 5–6 years old, but honestly, it still runs really well. It’s not slow at all, and for what I do, performance has never really been an issue.

The biggest problem is the display. It broke a couple of years ago, and since then I’ve basically been using the laptop like a desktop computer: plugged into an external monitor and kept in one spot. Recently, it also stopped turning on, so I’ve sent it to a repair shop to get diagnosed/repaired. The diagnostic itself is $89, and there may be additional repair costs.

Now I’m debating whether I should spend $1,649 CAD on a MacBook.

The deal I’m looking at is pretty good:

  • 13-inch MacBook Air
  • 16 GB unified memory
  • 512 GB storage
  • 10-core CPU
  • 8-core GPU
  • 16-core Neural Engine
  • $200 Apple gift card included

My main uses would be pretty basic:

  • Word/documents and schoolwork
  • General university use
  • Casual research/browsing
  • Note taking
  • Music production as a hobby/part-time thing
  • Nothing particularly heavy

The biggest reason I want the MacBook is honestly portability. I’m going into university, and my current laptop basically has to stay plugged into a monitor because of the display issue.

But at the same time, I’m wondering if I’m just looking for an excuse to finally buy the MacBook I’ve always wanted.

If my current Dell gets repaired for a reasonable price and continues working perfectly, should I just suck it up and keep using it at home, save the $1,649, and use what I already have?

Or is having a portable laptop for university actually worth spending that much money on?

I’d especially love to hear from people who were in a similar situation, especially Canadians/university students who switched from Windows to Mac.

What would you do in my situation?

Edit: The display for my current laptop works, its in the repair shop, cause its having trouble starting up. I'll ask the repair shop guy if I can carry it places but I'm scared it might break again.
