Maya.net eSIM has gone down the drain - it's a money squeeze with lower quality delivered

I used to use Maya.net for all of my eSIMs and always recommend them but they've completely changed their plans options. Before, you could get data and plans as closely aligned with your trip and needs as possible.

A recent overhaul of their offerings and service has just totally enshittified their product.

Now, instead of getting a country-specific eSIM, they offer regional ones. So sure, the eSIM might work in Thailand, but it'll also work in Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. Sounds better, right? It's not. At least not in my experience. These one-sim-serves-all services always seem to offer wider coverage but at slower speeds and lower area coverage in each respective country.

So when I'm in Thailand using their eSIM, I'll be on a random ocean road and my Maya sim will get zero bars of service while the other traveler with me on another provider strictly for Thailand has full bars and 5g.

Not only that, but their pricing has gone wild.

Second, you can't pick your duration anymore. It's 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, take it or leave it. And here's the kicker, the average tourist is on vacation for 11 days* (*this is according to Thailand's recent data claims they used to determine their visa exemption timelines) So you don't quite fit in the 7 day tier and have to go to the next, much more expensive and overkill 14 day tier.

Going somewhere for ten days? You're buying 14. Five days? You're buying 7. Every trip that doesn't land exactly on one of their four numbers is a trip where you pay for days you'll never use.

Both changes take away your ability to buy what you need and replace it with a bundle they picked for you. You used to be able to say, "Thailand, twelve days." Now you say, "Southeast Asia, fourteen days, hope it works."

And the new pricing hides more than it shows. Every plan is "Unlimited" with no fair use policy anywhere on the page, which almost always means there's a daily high-speed cap before they throttle you. There's no per-GB figure to compare against anything. There's no mention of which carrier you're actually being pushed to, which matters more than the price does (this is why my service fails on the random ocean road where the traveler next to me has perfect signal). Compare that to the country-specific providers still doing it the old way: they'll tell you the network, the speed tier, the exact GB and the exact price per GB, and they'll let you pick any start date and any length up to six months.

I'm not mad that Maya raised prices. I'm annoyed that they took away the precision that made them worth recommending, then disguised it as some kindf of upgrade.

I skipped the island hopping tours in Krabi for something better - Krabi Sunset Cruises on a 100-year old sail boat

Full disclosure up front: I met the owner on this trip and feel a bit biased now haha (I didn't know him before, and I paid in full for my tickets) and so I told him I'd be happy to share my experience - he doesn't know I'm sharing here, I think he just thought I would post a Google review, but i feel like him and this experience he's curated deserves the exposure. To be clear, I really do think it's better than the Krabi island hopping tours most people book, but weigh that as you like.

So I've lived here in Krabi for a while, just south of a decade, and I've done the island hopping tours more than a few times. It's one of those things where all the islands in the area, like caves and temples, kinda feel the same after you've seen one. And once you've done it, there's no real need to do it again, you only do it again because friends or family come into town. I mostly try to avoid the island hopping tours these days because of the cramped seating, the commercialization of each island, the crowds at each stop, and the tinnitus-inducing scream of the longtail engines.

This sunset cruise is a different thing entirely, though. A couple of people here bought a 100-year-old ship and brought it back to life. Big masts, bamboo-slatted sails dyed bright red. It's genuinely striking, to the point where people on the beach stop and photograph it going past.

We went to quiet swimming spots and secluded beaches that I have never been to, and at no point did I feel like I was being fed into a shop or restaurant to spend more money. One of the great offers of this boat is that they have multiple paddle boards and kayaks that you can use. Finding any paddle boards in krabi can be a challenge on its own, so the fact they had multiple was great! The deck is spacious enough that you can actually sprawl out, climb up to the top deck, or perch at the bow doing the Jack and Rose thing. On the way back I just lay on the deck watching the sunset come through the bamboo slats as we cruise into town.

Honest caveats: It's a relaxed trip - you're not going to be speeding to the 4 touristic islands that all the touristy boats are going to, so if your goal is to join those crowds, this might not be for you. It is more expensive than a long tail boat trip. There's only like 30 spots available and they fill up fast, so I think the price is expected - but with this price, you also get access to a buffet, snorkel gear and the water toys I mentioned earlier (paddleboards and kayaks), you won't find that on any of the other island hopping tours here. It can be hot and sunny, so bring sunscreen and probably a hat too.

The tour is a solid chunk of day - I think we started around 12:30 or 1 and we got back to land just after nightfall so you do get your money's worth.

I should also note, they do have food and drinks menu onboard as well that are separate from the inclusive buffet and water. If you drink, I can highly recommend the spicy margarita, I had more than I should have and I wish I could find them on land.

One last thing that I really liked about this trip was that Michael, the guy running the operation, was always out there with us, GoPro in hand, making sure to capture photos of everyone that he later uploads and shares access to.

As the name suggests, the highlight of the trip is the sunset cruise back into Krabi.

Overall just a fantastic trip and probably the only island hopping tour in Krabi that I would eagerly do again.
