readme.club on your e-reader: a free app for Android e-ink devices

Something I've wanted for a while: readme.club right on the reader itself, not on the phone next to it. It's ready now ❤️

  • News section with photos, saved offline. New articles show in bold, and you pick up where you stopped.
  • Our guides on a bookshelf by brand, with a table of contents. They work with Wi-Fi off.
  • Your wallpapers: the 4,000+ you've shared, filtered to the ones that fit your screen. One tap saves the original.

Everything is made for e-ink: pages instead of scrolling, minutes left in the footer, no animations, a refresh every few pages against ghosting, and no link that leaves the app.

It weighs about 200 KB and needs no account, no tracking and no Google Play Services. Updates install from inside the app. Not made for just one device.

I built it on the Xteink S4, but it's made for any Android 11+ e-ink device. The layout grows with the screen, and the wallpaper gallery recognises your device to show only the sizes that fit.

It already runs on the Xteink S4 (running Android 11) and the Mudita Kompakt (running Android 12), and I'd love to grow that list. If you have an Android e-reader, install it and tell me how it goes. There's a short form on the site, no account needed, and every device that works goes on the "Tested on" list.

(Kindle and Kobo don't run Android, sorry.)

Download and install steps: https://www.readme.club/app

It's free and open source (GPL-3.0), so ideas, bugs and pull requests are all welcome. I'll be in the comments.

Coming from an iPad? Reset your expectations before you get frustrated

Hi everyone,

I wrote a quick guide about my experience getting started with my Nomad.

At first, I expected too much, hoping this awesome tablet would work just like my iPad. I was definitely wrong, and this community helped me a lot. So thank you all, for real!

It took me a few weeks to really get the hang of it, but I've had it for a year now and I can't do without it. Honestly, I can't see myself using any other tablet for note-taking. I even gave the Kindle Scribe a try, but came right back to the Nomad.

Everything I used to do with my iPad has become so simple on the Nomad. It's my daily driver at work, whether I'm in meetings or with clients, and I even use it on weekends for personal projects. Where I used to pull out my iPad, I now prefer reaching for the Nomad.

Well, except for gaming, of course ;)

X4 Pro just arrived

Hey everyone,

My X4 Pro just arrived today, so I wanted to drop a quick initial reaction.

Physically holding it, it feels virtually identical to the standard X4 in hand. But as soon as you boot it up, the difference is clear: the firmware and the official app experience feel quite different out of the box.

I'm going to put it through its paces over the next few days to do some proper testing, but my initial take is that it really rounds out their product lineup well.

How do you actually use your Xteink in real life?

Hey everyone!

Fiche specs, teardowns, and firmware guides are awesome, but my favorite part of this community has always been seeing how people actually integrate their X3 or X4 into their daily lives: from replacing phone doomscrolling during commutes to building tiny EDC setups.

To capture these real-world experiences, I just launched a new section on the hub: "My Xteink and Me".

👉 Check it out here: readme.club/stories

What it is:

It's a collection of honest, bite-sized takes from real owners. No sponsored reviews or technical specs, just real reading habits.

Each story breaks down:

  • 💡 How you found out about it
  • 🎒 How you use it daily (where you read, cases/bags you use)
  • ❤️ What you love & 🛠️ What you'd change
  • 💡 The #1 tip you’d give a new owner on day one

We already have 15 stories live, I'd love to read yours!

If you’ve been using your X3 or X4 for a while, take 3 minutes to share your story.

Whether you read 5 minutes a day in line at the coffee shop or finished entire book series on it during long trips, your experience helps prospective buyers and new owners more than any marketing page ever could.

To submit yours, just log into your ReadMe account and hit the "Add my story" button at the top of the page.

Looking forward to reading your setups!

Happy reading,

Florent

Will the X3/X4 fit right behind your phone?

Hey everyone!

A question that keeps popping up in the community (and one I've been wanting to solve for a while) is: "Will my X3 or X4 comfortably fit right behind my phone in my daily carry setup or sleeve?"

To make everyone's life easier, I just shipped a brand-new feature on the hub: The Phone Compatibility Matrix.

👉 readme.club/compatibility

What it does:

  • 75+ Phones Indexed: From Apple, Samsung, and Google to OnePlus, Xiaomi, Sony, Nothing, and Fairphone.
  • Automated Math: The site automatically compares the physical dimensions to estimate if the X3 or X4 can comfortably sit behind your specific phone model (Fits, Tight, or No).
  • Community "Crowdsourced" Verification: A dedicated "Confirmed by" column where you can log your actual, real-world results.

I need your help to make it 100% reliable

While the mathematical estimation based on raw dimensions is a solid starting point, nothing beats real-world testing.

If you are currently using your X3 or X4 stacked right behind your phone, please take 10 seconds to log your result on the page. Your quick confirmation is what will make this tool genuinely useful for anyone looking to build their perfect pocket or travel setup.

(Note: You just need to log into your free ReadMe account to submit a confirmation).

Open for feedback!

This is a V1, so if your phone is missing from the list, or if the automated status looks slightly off for your specific setup, let me know right here or via the site. I'll be updating the database.

Happy reading!

Quick update on ReadMe.club (New X3/X4 spec table, device photos, and cleaner UI)

Hey everyone,

For those who don't know the project yet: ReadMe.club is an independent community hub I built for Xteink X3 and X4 owners. No affiliation with the brand, just a side project made by an owner, for owners.

I've been shipping a lot of design and content updates lately, so I wanted to share a quick breakdown of what’s new:

What’s new on the hub:

  • Dedicated Guides for Each Device: Ever wanted a dedicated guide to the X4 or the X3? It's now live. Thanks everyone involved.
  • Revamped Member Profiles & Lost & Found: If you have a member card, your public profile is now much cleaner. I added a "Found this member's e-reader?" button that links directly to your custom Lost & Found page. Useful if you ever lose your device.
  • Actual Device Photos: On the Start Here page and the X3 vs X4 comparison, I added product photos so you can see the size difference at a glance, along with a clean spec comparison table (screen, gyro, battery, storage, etc.).
  • Buy Me a Coffee: The site has zero ads and zero tracking. If you want to support the hosting costs, there’s now a simple, one-time tip option starting at €1 on the pricing page. No sub required.
  • Freshness Dates: Every wallpaper and resource detail page now shows its submission date, so you know exactly what’s brand new.

A quick reminder of what’s already available for free:

  • Wallpapers: A massive library of community-submitted wallpapers ready to drop on your device.
  • Fonts: Ready-to-use .bin fonts (no painful conversion needed).
  • Firmware Hub: Track custom firmware builds, including CrossPoint updates.
  • Member Cards: Free public profiles with your reading list, gear setup, and the Lost & Found QR code. More to come.

The site is entirely open, and member accounts are 100% free. Premium tiers exist purely for those who want to support the infrastructure, but nothing essential is paywalled.

Come have a look and let me know what you think: readme.club

Happy reading! ✌️

10k members, 250k monthly views, and 0 ads. The State of ReadMe.club

Hey everyone, Florent here.

Haven't posted in a while because honestly, ReadMe.club runs pretty well on autopilot lately. But we just passed some crazy milestones (10k members and around 250k page views a month), so I ran a quick survey last week to see where we're at.

Got over 700 responses in 48 hours. Here’s the raw breakdown of what you guys want:

- The X4 completely dominates: Over 70% of the respondents are on the X4.

- You want apps, not web features: 30+% votes for "More custom apps / plugins". That crushed everything else. Wallpapers came second (30% votes) and a third-party store for covers/3D prints came third (a little less than 10% votes).

- The curation filter: Someone mentioned "No more AI generated wallpapers". Message received, we're going to tighten the filters with the mods.

My favorite feedback was definitely: "Add dark mode to the website and I will subscribe." Deal. Next time I open the code editor, that’s priority number one. Also shoutout to the person who wrote: "I’m not sure what exactly to use on the site but I’m happy for the community." I love this place.

What's next? I’m not going to turn ReadMe into a bloated "everything hub". I want to keep it fast, clean, and 100% ad-free. Based on the votes, I’ll focus some time on hunting down and documenting cool apps and plugins for the X4. I'm working on a new submission form too. Feel free to send me some URL / ideas in DM too 😊

Massive thanks to our 3 mods and to the few "Friends of the site" who help cover the server bills.

Back to reading!
