Which character would you want a spin-off of?

It can be a comedic spin-off like ASHK or a side story to explore them more. It can be a prequel. Anything you'd want to say. Which character would you want to be given this opportunity and do you have any ideas on any specific scenarios or ideas?

Personally, if we went with the comedic route, which seems redundant considering ASHK, I'd want a spin-off with a complete focus on the sunflower trio as their dynamic is the funniest part of TBHK for me.

I'd personally love either a prequel of Teru's beginning years of becoming an exorcist or a present day side story that explores the exorcist world and his current standing in it and his many encounters with dangerous supernaturals. I'd also just love a spin-off dedicated toward wholesome family fluff of the Minamoto siblings and their daily lives and domestic scenes as I adore the siblings to bits and always smile when their bond is displayed.

What are your ideas?

Maybe she deserved it after all...

I'll bet she's even the type to skip all cutscenes in Otome games just so she can get to the romantic CGs. She probably plays gacha only to pull for new male charactes.

When the worst people make a good observation

Kako: Stores away an hourglass that tricks humans into warping timelines, while having been implied to have messed with timelines before. He also did nothing while Hanako made the worst decisions and scolding him slightly until things got too far and he had to change the timeline.

Mirai: Goes around changing students into old people the moment she gets set loose

Akane: Honestly I don't have many accusations to make beside his actions toward Aoi going too far. He was also smart enough to just stay silent.

Tsukasa: Tsukasa

Hanako: Hanako

Yashiro: Invoked the powers of satan to manipulate the person in question into loving her and got cursed for dialogue skipping.

I'm not saying Teru is an angel and paragon of justice, but the people in this entire courtroom were the last people who should say that. In fact, he's the first person to actually do anything to oppose the severance and the altered timeline. Does he worship chaos? Yes, but he does so in moderation xD

Soooooo... are we gonna talk about this?

Rereading the chapters again, I recalled how Kou said Teru's sword was incredibly heavy to the point that holding it with both hands was already a struggle. Then I remembered how Aoi managed to fight Amane in chapter 121, stating that she can use a spirit blade, too. This makes sense, since being engaged to Teru apparently exposed her to exorcist training of her own. Not only can she wield Teru's blade, but she can apparently use exorcist powers, which kinda raises it's own questions regarding the worldbuilding of TBHK. Aside from the hilarious fact, that she trained not just out of obligation but also for being pissed at Teru, she says that she's only strong enough to protect herself. It's hard to take this statement at face value, because she also got a higher score than Teru in school exams in chapter 59 and said that she just "pushed herself a little this time". It's possible that it wasn't just "a little" and she studied as hard as Akane, but didn't want to admit it. My point is that it's possible that she's stronger than she lets on. Probably not as strong as Teru, but seemingly stronger than Kou at least if she can wield the same blade without struggling. Akane can use the blade, too, which makes sense since he's strong enough to destroy walls with his fists. It's possible that this is only possible in his clockkeeper form, which he isn't in chapter 121, but despite being in his human form he was able to drive out Hanako out of Yashiro during the first clockkeeper arc, and he was also wearing glasses that were supposed to suppress his supernatural qualities, which is why he seemingly has to take them off to change into his clockkeeper form. Either Aoi is built different or Kou is even weaker than I assumed XD

I'm honestly curious how she's able to have exorcist powers, when it seemed like something only exorcist families can learn. Sumire can use lightning, but that's because she's actually related to the Minamotos, which implies that it's a genetic thing. Aoi may be an Akane, but she isn't Sumire's direct descendant. It's possible that Aoi also has Minamoto ancestry, but this hasn't been said so far and in this case would be many generations ago. It's not like being a Kannagi enables this, as Yashiro can't use exorcisms directly. It didn't seem like she could use lightning when she fought Amane, but honestly the exorcist world in TBHK is left completely unexplored so there could be more exorcism powers than lightning. It would also be interesting to hear how she was able to see supernaturals and perform exorcism as this implies that you can do that through training, when I previously assumed that it's genetic. If this is a Kannagi thing could Yashiro also wield the same powers?

The worldbuilding in TBHK has always been one of the most notoriously ambigious ones as so much stuff in the story is left unexplained and plot twists get introduced that seemingly come out of nowhere. Like the sudden reveal that Aoi getting sacrificed transferred her lifespan to Yashiro without elaborating any further. I feel like the story retcons stuff a lot and I feel like the reason Iro leaves so much unexplained is because she doesn't want to set information in stone that could potentionally clash with her ideas in the future. Like plotpoint of Aoi's hand being numb after getting exposed to the far shore and Teru making it possible for Aoi to leave despite it being impossible on account of her being dead, as neither get explained and it's difficult to ascertain if it ever will.

I got a bit off-topic here, but what I wanted to say was that this raises so many more worldbuilding questions than I initially thought.

This is the most genius thing Iro has done

It's really hard for me to put into words just how much I love this plot point and how it converted me into a TeruAoi believer. It also made me so happy that the love triangle with Akane was a thing. One of the few love triangles I not only tolerate, but I'm actually glad exist. Beside Tohru, Kyo and Yuki from Fruits Basket I struggle to even remember another good love triangle lol

I'm still working on my Teru/Aoi relationship analysis, but I just wanted to gush about this in the meantime. Any interaction between these two no matter how inconsequental is both hilarious and characterizes them so much to the point that chapter 17 of the damn spin-off is such an important analysis point for these two.

I'm praying that everyone will remember this timeline so their antics can continue.

When does defending a character become problematic?

I've noticed a trend where many people try frame Hanako in the most positive light or atleast in a non-negative one and I'm not sure how I feel about it. So many times there are examples of morally deplorable actions done by Hanako that get explained away by him doing them in a concious way to get others to hate him or the fact that he is suffering from them. And I keep wondering how exactly the intention changes the context that the people around him are the ones suffering because of his self-centered hatred that makes him refuse to do better. Or how the suffering he feels is anything but self-inflicted. Other times his actions get minimized with explanations that are based on mere assumptions that the story provides no implication for. Like how Hanako fought Teru and Akane being prepared to kill and people claim that he wasn't planning to or that he was holding back, when he's literally fighting to keep someone else dead and he's desperate to save the person he cares most for. I would'nt have a problem with this if someone actually provides an example that supported that claim, but all I often get is an assumption that is not supported by the story and there being implications that suggest the opposite. Or how people claim that he was not responsible for the severance and that his only crime is negligence, when it was the destruction of the Yorishiros that he decided on was the reason it happened in the first place and there were many implications of him clearly knowing and planning the severance even if he was being often passive. At best he was planning on it by the end of picture perfect. At worst he decided on it since the 4pm bookstacks arc. When the minimization of his actions doesn't work the argument changes toward him being a 13 year old and that the messiness is intentional and good writing. I agree with that, but my problem is that it changes the topic and drifts away from what the discussion is about. I've never seen a character get shielded from criticism as much as with Hanako. It sometimes feels like I or the characters in the story don't get to criticize him purely because Hanako is a tragic and sympathetic character which honestly only worsens my perception of a character at that point

I would like to clarify that I don't mean to shame anyone for liking Hanako or wanting to defend him, but it is a nuanced topic that I thought would be interesting to discuss. I hope we can all be respectful down below!

Am I the only one who thinks Kou is a massive hypocrite?

I've seen so many people to this day call Teru a horrible brother for his fight with Kou and even outside of that it seems like the general consensus is that Teru is the one with issues in their relationship. I'd argue that it takes two to tango. And even then I genuinely think that a lot of the communication issues in their relationship are on Kou.

1.) Teru calls Kou weak, but he's not wrong. Kou is objectively one of the weakest characters in the story and the clockkeeper arc proved that he is no where near Teru's level even when he reaches his age. And the new timeline showed this yet again, as it seems like with their mother being alive and Kou no longer being solely responsible for taking care of the house he actually got more time to actually have more experience with the supernatural as shown with how composed he seemed when he and Mitsuba encountered the entity in the form of a child Tsukasa. I would assume that Teru trained him here more. In fact we know that even in the original timeline Teru used to help Kou with training based on official art on twitter. He seemed to know more about possession and seemed more professional, but even then he was powerless.

Beside him lacking the strength, required of an exorcist to the point that he can get possessed by supernaturals, his empathy is simply not a good fit for this type of profession. He needs to be able to kill without hesitation to protect not only civilians, but also in order to make sure he doesn't die. Realistically Kou would not have survived if he started being an exorcist at the same age Teru did.

Him protecting Hanako and attacking Teru proved he couldn't be trusted with tasks and also with being objective as he protected him not because he thinks Hanako is in the right or harmless, but because he wanted to support Yashiro, which while sweet is the worst reason he could have ever given to Teru. It was put bluntly a complete middle finger.

2.) Teru supposedly doesn't trust Kou and is bad at communicating, but that makes no sense when you consider how many times Teru gave Kou tasks and how many times Kou would end up not actually following up on his promises to help. And even then Teru keeps trying to toss Kou a bone after begging for his trust only to go against his wishes and act shocked when Teru is disappointed.

How did Kou not foresee that Kou would be pissed (and even then Teru tried to not immediately blow up at him, only reaching his breaking point after Kou picked all the worst dialogue options) in the following scenario: In the young exorcist arc Kou stops Teru from exorcizing Hanako after Hanako threatened him a knife. This was already a scenario where he was entrusted with a task that he ended up doing the opposite of what was asked. Teru tried to respect Kou's decision and compromised when Kou promised that he would make sure Hanako wouldn't harm the students. Many arcs later Kou ended up being wrong about Hanako not being a danger when Aoi was sacrificed, so he failed to keep his promise. EVEN THEN Teru ended up taking Kou along on the rescue mission and was upfront with him on his goal to kill Hanako. Teru trusted Kou with keeping others safe, it backfired, so he ends up doing his duty and Kou betrays him with this context. Kou is absolutely not trustworthy as an ally when he folds out of completely personal reasons.

And Kou is a complete hypocrite for complaining about his supposed lack of trust, when Kou is rarely honest with Teru.
- After Kou learns about Yashiro's lifespan and tries to find a way to save her, he gets advice from other characters. But he doesn't approach Teru with this problem. What he does instead is have Teru help him collect bugs so he can ask Tsuchigumori for advice. He doesn't tell Teru what the bugs are for and isn't honest about his intention. He'd rather waste the time of his brother who is eager to please his siblings, when Teru barely has any time in the first place, instead of trusting him with personal matters. That ended up bothering me a lot when I reread this chapter. Sure, Teru is happy to spend time with Kou, but the fact that Kou hides his intentions seems extremely hypocritical. He even receives advice from Natsuhiko of all people.
- Teru is actually extremely upfront about his intentions to Kou and tells Kou his thoughts out of respect
- Kou lies to Teru after they made up about the supernatural, Mitsuba, outside their house. They just made up, Teru decided trust Kou with exorcisms and respect his decisions while Kou boldly declares about being serious about being an exorcist only to lie to Teru within minutes and never telling him the truth about what actually happened, which was treated as a mere joke.

3.) Kou is jealous of Teru being capable and everyone trusting him, while ignoring that Teru doesn't have a real connection with any people outside his siblings, while being objectified by everyone around him (as an idol by his peers and as a tool by the exorcist world). That's also while ignoring that he spends most of his time being miserable and barely having time, working on a thankless profession, where he does a good job based on the premise that everyone gets to be safe and isn't even aware of being safe thanks to him. And this profession forced him to suppress his emotions, neglect his personal need and safety, having to stay vigilant and not die so that his siblings are not left alone without an adult figure, a role he needed to assume by the age of 12 and arguably even before their mother's death.

Teru isn't a perfect human being, but I really fail to see how any of this is his fault, when he did his best to provide Kou with a proper childhood and even outside of that tries to spend the limited time he has to make his siblings happy, like helping Kou study, fulfilling any request his siblings give, respecting Kou's maturity by being upfront no matter what and trusting Kou for help despite being reasonably conflicted about it. Kou is obviously also a great brother, but he needs to be held accountable more for stuff that is genuinely on him and I say this as someone who is also a middle child and connected with him on a lot of his problems and emotions. Being the younger brother or having good intentions doesn't absolve you from the consequences of your own actions.

My shipping tierlist

I'm currently working on my Teru and Aoi analysis, but I felt like posting something right now, so I ended up updating my shipping tier list. Enjoy!

u/icemage56 — 16 days ago

Anybody have any unusual ships they like?

As the title asks, what are the weird ships that you kinda like so none of the main ships.

In my case I'm starting to take a liking to Teru x Sakura as this seems like it could be really entertaining. Not only does it provide a hilarious dynamic to the Natsuhiko x Sakura ship since we only get crumbs with that ship, but that would make the third main ship that Teru cucks, the other two being Akane x Aoi and Hanako x Nene. Even better that this is also the third time that the guy getting cucked is also terrified of Teru. And while they've never had a single interaction before it feels like Teru and Sakura would be absolutely hilarious together.

What weird ships do you feel could be fun discussing?
