Tumblergate

I’ve heard of a nut allergy, but an alcohol allergy?

Wow. I didn’t know such a thing existed.

Are these strange cups Japan’s answer to the Stanley Cup?

Also didn’t Assun say she drinks like a bottle of whiskey a night? I get it’s part of the job, but just casually decanting shochu into a tumbler feels like the production team should be asking “are you ok?” And thinking about an intervention?

It’s not like she just grabbed a can of asahi from the fridge, decanting a spirit is a bit excessive no?

Pushing Henry Jr. ?

Partner and I are not close to Henrying, but partner comes from a FIRE family. Tech stuff. But they never followed said path but at the same time there isn’t a slush fund etc that they just get topped up. So life is rather frugal.

Majority of our child’s friends are either tech/law/finance.

I am finding myself increasingly having “heated debates” with my partner about my desire for our child NOT to follow in our paths, and that only tech, finance or law will offer any form of financial security.

Now, AI job apocalypse aside (yes yes we should all be plumbers, gas fitters or electricians), I’m curious as to those with children:

  1. Does this conversation ever happen (with you?)
  2. Is it something you give much thought to (regardless if it’s discussed or not)?
  3. If a FIRE child is a goal, how would you go about selling the idea? Are they going to be the next Federer, Bellingham or David Hockney? No probably not. Could they be some unknown having lunch in Assenheims on 200K? Maybe?

I’m deeply cynical, and have stopped buying into the “if you do what you love the money will come”. It’s just nonsense. Like Santa. And God.

I would much rather my child get their head down, focus on maths, further maths and physics, become a quant, hate it, FIRE at 30 odd and THEN do what they love… race Porsches, paint Warhammers, groom dogs… I literally don’t care.

CD duo hiring query?

Reading in Campaign about another CD duo getting hired and knowing that the market is indeed shit (she writes as she considers food delivery as a viable way to pay the rent) I began wondering about the whole process CDs get hired.

I have many queries around the mechanics of how all of this works.

With holdco’s laying ppl off galore, what is the advantage in hiring a pair of CDs?

Can you not just hire one?

What happens if one decides their job is shit (and leaves)? Does the other have to resign or can they stay out?

Do they browse job boards independently looking for CD roles, and when they have that first interview it’s speakerphone on and a confused talent lead going “who am I speaking to?”

Do these pairs get paid equally?

Do they get pay rises and bonuses equally?

There seems to be so much upheaval in the industry but it’s impossible not to read trade press weekly and see the Bernbach model keep on keepin’ on’.

Does no one ever question the ROI around it?

Creator/Influencer marketing

If this territory is now firmly in the rear view mirror, possibly as a result of a resistance to AI or TikTok increasingly pushing marketplace in-platform, do we think the industry will eventually cool off them (again), or are they here to stay?

I keep seeing how people are saying Cannes 26 was dominated by influencers and “creators” and that the way of working with them is evolving (does anyone have the System1 creator effectiveness report handy?)

Are brands really cutting back on everything and going all in on social + content creators?

I can’t a scroll through the job section on LinkedIn without at least some holdco role in social with the caveat that you must have creator experience but I find it so depressing; it’s as if all brands from luxury to FMCG across all demographics only gain brand awareness or consideration if they’ve seen it on a paid social campaign or because they happen to be a part of a few random niche communities.

If I was a paint brand am I really going to go “hey Gen Z and millennials love that A24… why don’t we connect with a content creator who specialises in liminal spaces and get them to focus on our new mustard yellow emulsion?”

“Or we could just run a few campaigns in some home interior magazines?”

“Ma-ga-zine? What is this m-ag-ah-zeeen?”

Cannes? Song?

Cannot help but see the Cannes Lions content across LinkedIn and see Ndidi and Nick (Law) chatting away.

At the same time, I know this sub is 99% ACN, Julie, the share price, and whatever latest reinvention we’ve got cooking.

So my question is: outside of Song, does Song never even get thought of at all? I never understand the overall sentiment towards it.

A beacon of ingenuity and human creativity or a Frankenstein’s Monster of acquisitions that contributes little to nothing to the bottom line?

Transitioning into Performance?

Looking for some advice re. PM agency side. Was contacted by an agency’s talent lead about a role they’re looking to hire - very much described as brand-lead.

My background is agency, ATL. I’m not a T-shaped specialist in things like CRM or social, but have an understanding of the basics; and I’d work with Strats in those fields to ensure the “big idea” or brand is consistently showing up in their messaging.

Speaking to the VP, I’m now told that the role is “performance”. At no point did I ever mention having any firsthand experience in “performance”… ATL/top of funnel… that’s my territory.

It sounded like they want to get me in for a task/next stage, but should I follow up and just flag about what they’re after and what I can do?

Whilst I don’t want to talk myself out of consideration, I don’t want to painfully die in a role in 3-6 months that I’ve essentially never experienced before?

Apart from reading literature, to succeed in a mid-senior PM role, I’m assuming there’s a lot more to just briefing creatives well, or pulling out an insight? You surely need to know ROAS, CAC, other digital metrics, iterative testing, messaging/audience frameworks like the back of your hand?

Lens fit within frame query

Got some Ayame man ray frames with some 1.6 lenses inserted.

I did request that I didn’t want to see any lens protrusion beyond the frame.

Would this be seen as delivering against that ask?

I was told that 1.67 index wouldn’t achieve anything extra (apart from the cost).

I noticed that at the front side of the lens frame you can sort of feel a slight lip where the lens “sits” inside the frame, yet the back feels like it’s the lens that juts out beyond.

I’m sure no one else would even notice but I’m curious what the wider consensus would be?

On a second point, how many days does it take to get used to new a prescription? It feels like the lenses in these have a smaller centre of focus vs my old lenses and I don’t know if I’m just imagining all of this whilst my brain / eyes adjust.

Cheers!
