Why Mamata lost?

There are several reasons why Mamata lost:

  1. Anti-incumbency and the “cut money” syndicate at the grassroots level — The All India Trinamool Congress initially promised to end the corruption syndicate associated with the Left government, but ironically enough, it eventually became what it had once opposed. During TMC’s rule, corruption seemed to prevail across almost every sector — from business to art, cinema, and even sports. Mamata attempted to maintain her “jack of all trades” persona by intervening in nearly every sphere of society, which, according to critics, only deepened institutional decay and corruption at the grassroots level.

  2. Giving too much autonomy to her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee — Many people view Abhishek Banerjee as an intellectual impostor and an ineffective political strategist. Politics is not a corporate project that can run solely on catchy songs or Excel sheets prepared by IPAC. His alleged corruption and extravagant lifestyle, supposedly funded through his “business” ventures, appeared suspicious to many observers. The common masses often associate politics with public service, whether that perception is accurate or not. Naturally, people begin connecting the dots when they witness an ostentatious lifestyle from someone in public office. The exact scale of corruption linked to Abhishek may be debatable — or perhaps not 💀 — but his style of governance undoubtedly affected Mamata’s political legacy.

  3. Mamata’s desperate attempts to save her government and her abysmal stance on crimes against commoners — Since the very beginning of her tenure as Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee has often been accused of speaking insensitively about victims of rape, murder, and other atrocities whenever individuals linked to her party were involved. Whether in the RG Kar case, the Park Street case, or several others, critics argue that she frequently shifted blame toward the victims in some form. These statements — whether intentional or not — often came across as deeply misogynistic and reflected the same patriarchal mindset that the Left government had once been criticised for. Ironically, Mamata herself was expected to represent strong feminist leadership, especially as one of the few female Chief Ministers in India who challenged the Centre independently and overthrew 34 years of Left rule. In many ways, critics believe she eventually became what she once opposed.

  4. Appeasement politics and an excessively Islamophilic approach — Her overt political outreach toward Muslims became more visible after the rise of the BJP post-2014. Critics argue that this outreach gradually crossed the line between secularism and what they perceived as targeted Hinduphobia. They point to symbolic actions — such as performing temple rituals in what appeared to be a careless or performative manner — as examples of disrespect toward the majority religion of the state. During her rule, areas like Rajabazar and Park Circus, according to detractors, underwent drastic social and demographic transformation. Some critics argue that excessive political appeasement in the name of anti-Hindutva politics enabled communal tensions and weakened law and order. Places like Basirhat and Diamond Harbour are often cited by opponents as examples of this perceived change in Bengal’s socio-political identity.

  5. Irrelevance and poor PR management — Even many critics of TMC admit that Mamata’s speeches unintentionally became iconic for their humour. She was perhaps the only Chief Minister whose verbal mistakes consistently turned into viral moments. Slogans like “Hamba Hamba Ramba Ramba” have essentially become pop-culture references. However, once she became an established incumbent, all she really needed was better speech management, a competent teleprompter setup, and stronger PR. Public image matters immensely, especially among younger voters. By “irrelevance,” critics also refer to the decline in visible grassroots work over time. While her first five years in office were widely seen as productive, many feel the later years lacked direction and substance.

  6. The RG Kar case — the pivotal turning point — The infamous RG Kar case shocked the nation and forced people to confront the horrifying nature of such crimes. Mamata’s perceived support or defensive attitude toward some of the accused or allegedly connected individuals drew massive criticism. Many believe that this incident alienated one of her strongest voter bases — women. Until then, welfare schemes like Lakshmir Bhandar had helped her retain significant support, but the public response after the RG Kar incident was very different. Every controversial statement she made during that period left a lasting negative impression on common people, many of whom ultimately decided to vote against her.
