Felix passed away on the way to his vet appointment today. I feel so guilty.
I previously posted about Felix 6 weeks ago. He was diagnosed with both FIV and FeLV. He had severe anemia. We worked with our vet and tried all the medicines and vitamins we could, but his red blood cell count wouldn't go up. He had an appointment two weeks ago and it was the last chance the vet wanted to give him to get his red blood cells up. He was supposed to get rechecked on Thursday.
Yesterday, he completely stopped eating. He was vomiting (he hadn't done that at all during his sickness). He was breathing hard. We made the decision that we would euthanize him today. The vet couldn't get him in until this afternoon.
It's only a 5 minute ride at most to the vet. On the way, he started yowling and had a medical episode. I believe it was a seizure but it could have been a heart attack. I opened his carrier and put my arms around him and soothed him the best I could. He was still breathing when we made it to the parking lot, but he was gone when the vet checked his heart.
I feel so much guilt right now. I'm worried I made him wait too long or I did something wrong to stress him out. I just wanted him to pass peacefully with his family by his side. I should have let him go at his appointment two weeks ago.
Edit- I just want to say thank you to every single one of you for your kind words. And thank you to those of you who have shared your own stories with me. I'm reading every comment and they help me so very much.
My sweet Felix was diagnosed with both feline leukemia and feline aids last night. I am devastated.
Felix is only 2. I found him as a starving stray in September and he moved into my home in October (had to get him neutered and tested first).
I had him tested for everything, got his vaccines, got him neutered. He was negative for both feline aids and leukemia. I never would have had him around my other cats without testing. I kept him separated for months because he was infested with worms. I had no idea he would need to be re-tested. I am eat up with guilt wondering if I caused my other 3 cats to catch these awful diseases.
He was completely asymptomatic until this past week. He was very lethargic (not normal for him- he loves to play!) and barely touching his food. When he didn't eat last night, my family and I immediately took him to the emergency vet. He had a fever and was extremely anemic. Further testing confirmed he had feline aids and leukemia.
This is so unbearable. I have had cats my whole life and he is the sweetest one I have ever met. He is so full of love. I feel so guilty for not testing him twice.
I am scared my other cats will catch these illnesses and I'll lose all four of them. We are setting up vet appointments for them asap to test and get leukemia vaccines. I am scared Felix won't recover and he won't have much time left.
Love on your cats a little extra today. Your world can turn upside down in just one moment.
What did everyone else get?
Mine did not come with the activity book.... or the dipping sauce I ordered, but what else is new lol.
