I filed my return on time using FreeTaxUSA. I owed a small amount in federal taxes and set up direct deposit for it to be taken out. I mistakenly used a bank account I previously used on FreeTaxUSA that this time around did not have sufficient funds. I understand this is my mistake. When I noticed the payment didn’t go through I realized what happened and immediately went on IRS and made a Direct Debit payment with the correct bank account. (still by April 15th). I got a notice about the e-file payment being rejected which I expected and then today another notice, CP53E. I signed on to my account on the IRS website and it says I owe $25. After some digging and finding the transcripts page, I’m realizing that they likely just haven’t sent the notice yet but I’m getting penalized for the dishonored payment. It’s only $25 and I can pay it of course, but because I made a good faith attempt to immediately fix the issue is it worth trying to get the penalty dropped?
