Leica m6 issues

After spending years down the Leica M6 rabbit hole, I finally got to pick up a brand-new one from Wetzlar. Which makes it even more embarrassing that I feel like I don’t even know how to use it properly yet.
Loading film seems pretty straightforward, but I’ve noticed something odd with the film advance and I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong.
As far as I understand, the rewind crank (the little wheel on the left) should rotate whenever the film is being advanced. The strange thing is: sometimes it just doesn’t.
For example, I load a fresh roll, advance it a couple of frames until the frame counter reaches “0”, and I can clearly see the rewind crank turning. Everything seems perfectly normal at first.
But if I leave the camera sitting for a couple of weeks and then come back to shoot another frame, there are times when the frame counter advances normally but the rewind crank doesn’t move at all. Sometimes this goes on for several frames.
Whenever this happens, rewinding the film at the end of the roll also becomes extremely stiff and difficult.
Has anyone experienced something similar or has an idea what could be causing this? Is this normal, user error, or does it sound like a mechanical issue?
