The biometric scanner scene is a poignant moment for Mitchell. From what I’ve gathered, he’s pretty much an orphan (by circumstance or design - who never talks about his biological family other than his aspirations to have one of his own one day, and how Stafford and Young are his chosen family), who looks up to Stafford as a father figure. So it’s especially devastating to be ordered at gunpoint through the scanner. Out of all the crew members - before the reveal - he’s the only one who isn’t afraid of Stafford, just hurt and disillusioned. Tears brim in his eyes as he’s scanned. As a writer, it’s details like this that make characters memorable.
