Should we allow crossposts in r/aquarium?

We want to hear your input. Crossposts are a great and easy way for new people to post in this community, but it can be difficult for readers and viewers to truly understand the whole problem without navigating to a new subreddit where the original post was made. We initially attempted to remedy thos problem by requiring body text, but that instead led to posters circumventing with short statements or letters, with no context.

We want to know from our user base what you prefer to see and post on our subreddit. Should we disallow crossposts entirely on our subreddit, keep it as is with required body text, or require crossposts to have completed body text (which would require them being submitted to queue for manual mod approval)?

▲ 6 r/fishforthought+1 crossposts

Aside from trimming, what else would you do to this tank?

I need to reposition the anubias and trim the longer plants (can't remember what they're called), I have some more corkscrew val and red rotala from a plant tank that I can add, what else is missing? I don't have good luck with amazon swords, even with root tabs and fertilizer, the light is just an aquaneat light from amazon, so it could use an upgrade.

A Reminder About How We Treat Other Members

Hey everyone,

The mod team has been seeing an increase in comments that are unnecessarily rude, hostile, condescending, or outright mean toward people asking questions or sharing their aquariums.

We recognize that this has become an issue. We have also received modmail from members bringing these concerns to our attention, and we appreciate people letting us know when something is happening that we may not have seen.

That said, there is an important limitation that we want to make clear: we cannot monitor every single post and every single comment.

Moderating r/aquarium is a volunteer responsibility. The moderators have jobs, families, school, personal responsibilities, and lives outside of Reddit. We do our best to keep up with the community, but it is simply not possible for a small mod team to read every comment on every post every day.

This is where reports are extremely important.

If you see a comment that violates the subreddit rules, please report it rather than engaging with it or allowing the situation to escalate. A report brings it to the mod queue so that we can review it and take appropriate action.

Changes are coming

We will be adding and clarifying rules regarding how members interact with one another. Going forward, comments that are unnecessarily hostile, insulting, mocking, belittling, or otherwise violate our rules regarding respectful behavior will be removed and bans will be enforced when appropriate.

We also want to be clear that "I was just trying to help" does not excuse being unnecessarily rude. Aquarium advice can absolutely include criticism, disagreement, or pointing out mistakes. You can correct someone without attacking the person asking the question.

Depending on the severity of the behavior, previous moderation history, and whether the behavior continues or escalates, bans may range from:

• 1 day

• 3 days

• 7 days

• 14 days

• Permanent

Repeated rule-breaking will result in increasingly serious consequences.

Additionally, repeatedly making multiple comments on the same post that violate our rules may result in further action, even if each individual comment might seem relatively minor on its own.

Remember who you're talking to

r/aquarium is a community with people of many different ages and experience levels. Minors may also visit, post, and participate in this subreddit.

Please keep that in mind when interacting with other members. Regardless of someone's age, experience, knowledge, or mistakes, they should not be subjected to harassment, sexual or inappropriate remarks, personal attacks, or other behavior that would make this community an unsafe or hostile place to participate.

You do not necessarily know who is on the other side of the screen, so think about what you're saying before commenting.

Many people come to r/aquarium because they are looking for help. Some are beginners who genuinely don't know something yet. Others may have made a mistake and are trying to correct it. Being told what they did wrong is useful, however they also need to be told how to correct it. Being mocked, insulted, or made to feel unwelcome is not useful or helpful.

You do not have to agree with someone to treat them with basic respect.

So please remember:

If you can give constructive advice, give it.

If you can disagree respectfully, disagree.

If you can't do either, don't comment.

Want to help the community?

Our moderator applications are currently open and are pinned in the highlighted posts at the top of the subreddit.

As the community continues to grow, we could definitely use some additional help from knowledgeable and active members of the aquarium community. If you have experience with aquariums, enjoy helping others, and are interested in contributing to the community in a positive way, we encourage you to apply.

Being knowledgeable about the hobby is important, but so is being able to communicate that knowledge respectfully and constructively.

The mod team will be addressing these issues more consistently going forward. We also ask the community to help us by reporting rule-breaking comments instead of contributing to the problem.

Thank you to everyone who helps make r/aquarium a welcoming place for aquarium keepers of all experience levels.

Banner Contest - Submit Your Best Aquarium Photo!

We're giving the subreddit a fresh new look, and we'd love for the community to help!

Starting now through July 10, 2026 11pm (GMT-7), we're accepting submissions for a new r/aquarium banner.

Rules

• Your submission must be your *own original photo.*

• The photo should be aquarium-related (freshwater, saltwater, aquascapes, planted tanks, shrimp, fish, invertebrates, etc.).

• Photos should be in a horizontal (landscape) orientation, as Reddit banner images are wide and short. Horizontal photos are much more likely to fit the required banner dimensions without excessive cropping.

• High-resolution images are strongly preferred.

• No watermarks, text, logos, or AI-generated images.

How to Enter

Post your image as a comment below. If Reddit compresses the image too much, you may also include a link to a full-resolution version.

You may submit more than one photo, but please keep it to a reasonable number.

How the Winner Will Be Chosen

Submissions will close on July 10, 2026 (GMT-7). After that, the moderation team will review all eligible entries and select the image that best represents the community while also working well within Reddit's banner dimensions.

By submitting an image, you grant the r/aquarium moderation team permission to use it as the subreddit banner. You retain ownership of your photo and may withdraw permission at any time by contacting the moderation team.

We can't wait to see your amazing aquariums. Thank you for helping shape the look of r/aquarium, and good luck!

Announcing our new community icon! (and an update from the mod team)

Hey everyone,

We heard your feedback loud and clear regarding the recent icon change. The goal is always to keep r/aquarium a vibrant, welcoming space that reflects the incredible passion of our hobbyists, and it’s clear the community prefers authentic, human-made artwork to represent us.

An incredibly talented artist in our community, u/SuicidalFlame (Check out their tumblr too! https://firenagy.tumblr.com), generously stepped up and designed a brand-new, custom icon for the subreddit! We are absolutely thrilled to debut their work today. Please join us in giving them a massive thank you in the comments below for dedicating their time and talent to leveling up our community's look!

A Quick Note on Community Boundaries

While we always welcome constructive feedback and open discussion about the state of the subreddit, the mod team has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment.

Lately, targeted mass-reporting and personal harassment have been directed at our moderators. We want to be entirely transparent: if you are unhappy with the management of this subreddit or feel the need to harass the people who volunteer to keep it running, you are more than welcome to leave.

Healthy debate is fine; stalking, toxicity, and abusing the report button are not. Future instances of targeted harassment will result in an immediate permanent ban from the community and will be escalated directly to Reddit Admin for violating the site-wide Content Policy against harassment.

Thank you to the 99% of you who make this a wonderful, supportive place to share our tanks every single day. Enjoy the beautiful new look!

Banner Photo Contest

Hey everyone!

As you might have noticed, our subreddit is currently missing a community banner photo. We want to change that as soon as possible, and what better way to do it than featuring your actual fish?

We are officially launching a Banner Photo Contest to get an awesome new look up on the sub right away!

**The Timeline & Rules:**

**How to enter:** Drop your best, highest-quality photo of your corydoras right here in the comments.

**Deadline:** This Sunday, June 7th at 9:00 PM EST.

**How to win:** Cast your votes by upvoting your favorite entries! The photo with the highest number of upvotes when the clock strikes 9:00 PM EST on Sunday will immediately become our new subreddit banner.

**Guidelines:**

Only one photo entry per person, please.

The photo must be your own original content.

Keep horizontal/landscape dimensions in mind when picking your photo, as tall vertical shots might get cropped oddly by Reddit's banner formatting.

Hello, r/corydoras community!

Hey everyone!

I’m super excited to introduce myself as the newest mod here on r/corydoras. I love these quirky little bottom-dwellers just as much as you guys do, and I'm really looking forward to helping out around the community.

I wanted to hit the ground running with a couple of quick quality-of-life updates to make the subreddit a bit easier to use:

• **Images in comments are now turned on!** You don't have to mess with Imgur or third-party links anymore just to share a photo in a thread. You can upload pictures directly into your replies now, which should make it way easier to show off your tanks or get quick help with a sick fish.

• **Refreshed rules:** I’ve cleaned up and added a few new guidelines to the sidebar just to keep things running smoothly and respectfully as the community grows. Feel free to give them a quick look.

We want your feedback!

Since I'm the new kid on the block, I really want to know what you guys think. This space is for all of us, so please let me know down in the comments if there are other changes you'd like to see.

Are there specific post or user flairs you want added? Would you be into weekly photo threads or anything like that? Drop any suggestions or thoughts below!

I'm really excited to be working with the existing mod team and all of you to keeping making this the best place on reddit for Corydora lovers!

Just to give you a little more background on me, I also moderate over at r/aquarium, r/fishforthought, and r/AfricanDwarfFrog. I'm really happy to bring that experience over here to help keep r/corydoras running smoothly!

Happy fishkeeping!

New Mods, Fresh Start! Welcome to r/fishforthought 🌿

Hey everyone!

I recently adopted this subreddit after it sat abandoned and unfinished by its original creator. "Fish for thought" is just too good of a name to let go to waste, so I’m stepping in to breathe some life into this space and give it a clear direction.

The Vision

The goal for r/fishforthought is to create a dedicated haven for the art, design, and aesthetics of aquascaping.

Whether you’re into high-tech planted tanks, minimalist Iwagumi layouts, low-tech natural ecosystems, or heavy DIY hardscaping, this is your space. Bring your tank progressions, plant trimming discussions, and hardscape brainstorming sessions here!

A Quick Note on Content

To keep this sub completely focused on the design and artistic side of the hobby, we won't be doing general fish husbandry or emergency health questions here. I’ve pinned a post at the top of the sub explaining the layout, but the short version is: Scapes go here, and general fish help goes to our sister sub, r/aquarium (which I also mod!).

What’s Next?

Since the sub was left pretty blank, u/PurpleOk3980 & I will be working behind the scenes over the next couple of weeks to set up user flairs, post flairs, and clean up the styling.

In the meantime, the doors are officially open! Drop a photo of your current setup, share a hardscape you're brainstorming, or just say hi in the comments below. Please feel free to message the mod team with any questions/comments that you may have.
