Caught a nice pic of a friendly springtail.

Caught a nice pic of a friendly springtail.

Seeker of moisture. Eater of the enemy. There are always lots of “is this pest” posts on here. Here’s a friend! Don’t kill these guys.

You can tell a springtail by their movement/namesake. Blow on it and see if it jumps to a different area code. They are fast moving and deliberate. Can somewhat resemble an adult thrip but the movement is a dead giveaway.

Black bear in the neighborhood by the M trail currently.

There is a bear running around over near Creekwood Park / Boylan Road on your way to the M trail. My wife just had a little encounter as it crossed the road. Be vigilant out there!

LER new growth under high power 365nm UVA torch. Very cool sunscreen-like defense.

So I got to thinking I’d use my 365nm light to draw out some thrips (worked super well) and noticed all the new growth on my big cacs and yearlings is all almost jet black under UV. It looks so much like those videos of sunscreen effectiveness under UV.

Has anyone else noticed this? It’s replicable across seeming all my sp varieties.
