If you don’t want to see the 300 S Broadway situation repeated, the time to act is now.

The next demolition/redevelopment is already in motion, even if we don’t know where it is, and the next 5 are already in planning. If people want to see the built environment of this city protected, they can’t rely on city regulation and they shouldn’t. People need to take local ownership and they need to improve and protect buildings so they aren’t a case of demolished bunk neglect or get too far to repair for preservation.

There are ways for even people of modest means to take part in investing, like Real Estate Cooperatives, or you can work to support community non-profits to own there own space. Or get groups like your church to take possession for community betterment.

And there are plenty of buildings that are not historic yet but soon will be. In 1950, no one would have thought of the 300 block of S Broadway as special. There were dozens of those buildings if not hundreds. Where is the historic preservation fight of 2040 or 2050? It’s probably a building you ignore every day. It’s probably a house that you could still afford and repair over years.

Is it a perfect solution? No. It is applicable to everyone everywhere? No. But the best time to protect a historic building is almost never ever the day a developer decides to knock it down.

Who will be named to fill Klobuchar’s seat (assuming she wins?)

Assuming Amy wins to Governor’s race (likely but I’ll admit not certain), who will she/Walz name to replace her?

I had thought it would be the loser of the Craig/Flanagan race, but I think even as closely as Amy and Angie are on positions, that’s maybe too big a beatdown to overcome.

Some have said Walz, but I think his desire to get out of politics is genuine, and I don’t think that would be super popular.

I genuinely don’t know who else would be in the running, so maybe a trusted senior staffer? Someone maybe heavily impacted by/involved in the response to Metro Surge? Maybe a rural-ish DFLer like Putnam or Hauschild?

Practice material for mask painting?

My daughter wants to paint her failed/practice mask for a 4-H project. Any suggestions on what material to practice painting on? And what sort of paint is used?

Organized efforts supporting a Chicago-Quebec corridor?

I live in Minnesota and am aware of/occasionally involved in the All Aboard Minnesota efforts to improve rail service in the state and connecting to other areas.

I have seen maps and social media posts about the value of a corridor for HSR including Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, and other cities in that corridor. Is there an actual organized effort to get that done? Or is it just NUMTOT stuff?

Best food for first night canoe camping?

We will be canoe camping the upper Mississippi soon, and launching later in the day the first day, so will have the option of making a fairly involved meal if we want.

We are normally backpackers, so usually it’s freeze dried and dehydrated type stuff.

What’s your favorite involved camping meal, especially on a fire?
