California Zephyr Service Disruption

I got a notification from Amtrak that train 6 out of Emeryville is stopped in Davis due to a service disruption. I'm supposed to catch it tomorrow from Denver to Chicago. Does anyone on that one know what's causing the delay?

New Amtrak Map | Long Distance routes

saw this on Facebook today: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1CoBCKWubm/

^(You can see the map in much higher resolution if you open the link and download it off of Facebook. If anyone knows where i can find this image that isn't Facebook) ^(at much higher resolution, Id love to know)

EDIT edit: It turns out, someone pointed out to me in the comments that this is probably a really old map that most likely someone just edited. ☹️ Thank yalls for the info tho.

Hear me out: heritage units for fallen flag railroads

I think Amtrak should do heritage units for the fallen flag railroads that originally operated some of Amtrak’s current routes. ALC-42’s in the same paint schemes of these similar to Norfolk Southern’s heritage unitsSome examples may be:

Great Northern (empire builder)
Pennsylvania (Pennsylvanian)
New York central (lake shore limited/wolverine)
Southern (crescent)
B&O (capitol limited when it returns)
Seaboard air line (silver series)
Illinois central (city of New Orleans)
Rio grande (California Zephyr)
Burlington (Illinois zephyr)
ATSF Warbonnet (Southwest chief)
Southern Pacific (sunset limited)
Milwaukee road (Hiawatha/borealis)

Set a new record! Northeast Regional 147 NYC - RNK

They said it couldn't be done! Over 2 hours and 20 minutes longer than the previous record delay, a full 8 hours and 3 minutes later than the original arrival time. I know that can't compare with the trains out west, and I've been on some of them, but I was at least amused to see that we set a new record. Major props to the crew for the water and snack packs and for keeping us updated. A combo of the heat, the wind, and signalling delays kept our speed low then a stalled train on the single track before Roanoke kept us waiting just 25 miles from our destination from about 3am onwards.

And this wasn't even the end of our trip... was relieved to see a supervisor from our thruway connecting service waiting for us near the platform to see if anyone needed the bus! Posting from that right now.

Not sure why it lists the train as having left NYC 7 hours late though, that is a bug. Left close to on time.

dealing with flights back home

hi all! i am looking at booking a trip on the empire builder in early october heading eastbound from seattle - chicago. currently, all tickets show this route arriving around 4:45pm in chicago. in general, would booking a flight from ohare for 9:15pm be possible, or should i spend the extra money for a hotel for a night in chicago and fly home the next day just to be safe? thank you in advance!

Adding cars on long distance trains

I'm currently on the California Zephyr on the way home of a RT Emeryville <--> Grand Junction trip.

I was talking to one of the train crew getting on at Grand Junction and they said they added three cars today so the train was extra long. I'm in the 30 car, so closest to the middle of the sleepers and the train is quite long ahead of us! maybe it's always like this, I only ride it about once a year.

My question is how do they make the decision to add more cars? See there is demand and then add them? He made it sound like it was a last-minute change and three cars is a lot.

On the way from Emeryville to Grand Junction yesterday they dropped a sleeper the morning the train left.

Anyway, just curious about the logistics, particularly of adding so many cars.

(Edit: did not mean to post a dup photo but can't figure out how to delete.)

Call from Amtrak about tomorrow’s train - “extreme standing capacity”

Just got this message from Amtrak. Has anyone received a similar message in the past? I’ve never had to stand on a train before and definitely wouldn’t want to tomorrow as I’ll be on a 10 hour journey, but I also don’t really have great options to rebook. Just trying to understand if it’s actually likely I’ll be stuck standing

Wifi on the Coast Starlight?

Friend's currently on it going south towards LA and while their phone says there's a network to connect to when they open the wifi interface there's nada. Is it acceptable for them to ask a conductor if there's a known issue with the wifi or are they relegated to spotty phone data in the mountains?

San Jose to Los Angeles to Santa Fe with Railpass and backpack

Likely doing a $500 rail pass with overnights in SoCal and maybe Arizona. Then back home on a different route, such as through Nevada. I have 10-14 days in August. Will have tent but can also do nice hotels. Have a good budget for food and wine. Any suggestions to make it fun? Going solo.

Just stopped at Juanita's at the El Paso Amtrak station while aboard the eastbound Texas Eagle, 11/10, she deserves all the love and support❤️

Potatoes, ground beef, and green chilis! It really hits the spot and I wish more stations had food vendors like her!
