Lunch menu on the Milwaukee Road 'Twin Cities Hiawatha' (July 1, 1965)
Credit to Trainlover at streamlinermemories.info for the menu.
As he notes in his commentary, the only main without any meat in it is a cheese sandwich. If you were vegetarian, hope you liked that and bean soup.
The menu variety and creativity by this point isn't huge; the sixties were not a good decade for passenger rail, and dining car offerings are very much an indicator of the long, slow decline the industry was facing. Still, this menu is more than sufficient for this train; the route from Chicago to the Twin Cities is usually between six and eight hours long, which only means two meals.
The Twin Cities Hiawatha is the direct ancestor of the modern Borealis, which is the first equivalent train run by Amtrak since 1985. It only has a counter-service cafe car with premade food, but is still a very popular route and the train often sells completely out.
Guess they opened up the October Northeast Regional route after closing it the other week
Got a text from Amtrak with cancellation notice of mid October trip from Boston to Washington DC. Had to figure out plan B for itinerary. Now I checked the site and the original trip I scheduled ( and was cancelled) has re-opened. Already re-secheduled my trip plans. Buyer beware.
EDIT: I called Amtrak and got my original trip itinerary re-booked. The price jumped as I was waiting on hold too.
Man fatally struck by Amtrak train in Plaistow, police say
According to police, the man was struck along the tracks near Blossom Road at 1:39 p.m.According to Amtrak, the train was traveling from Portland, Maine, to Boston when it struck a vehicle. WMUR’s crew did not see any vehicle at the scene, and police did not mention a vehicle in its news release about the incident. Amtrak officials said no train passengers or crew members were injured. Around 4:30 p.m., WMUR's crew saw the train leave the scene.
[OC] 2026 Amtrak Route Map
I created this Amtrak map using Rhino 6, focusing on preserving geographic accuracy. I orgininally wanted to show every service line as distinct, but decided to combine lower frequency services (daily and long-distance) where they share a terminal for clarity at this scale.
The goal is to eventually develop regional service diagrams to show every service as separate. I've started a (very in-progress) site below where I'll include these and the overall map.
Enjoy!
Rode Seattle to Chicago, then Chicago to Sacramento.
Saw lots of awesome scenery, but everyone posts pics of that, so here are some buildings and other slices of Americana that I saw out the window of my roomette.

Train Cancelled 19th Sept NYC to Boston
Hi all
I’m visiting Boston for a wedding in September but all of the trains have been cancelled on the day of travel. I’m from the UK so not used to this “oops sorry here zero reasons but sort yourself out without compensation” malarkey, and a bit stuck
I have to travel on the 19th, so it seems the direct train is not an option now
Would really appreciate some help from locals on other ways I can get from NYC to Boston. I only paid about $32
Thanks
So some kids just threw rocks at the train I was on
These Acela next-gens haven’t even been running for a full year 😭😭😭

NYP to SDY or ALB
I will admit that I’m very new to taking Amtrak. I have never done this route. I need to book it last minute at a certain time. Obviously there are no tickets available at the time that I need. I keep checking throughout the day to see if there might have been a cancellation, but no luck so far. What are the odds that I get a cancellation before Friday? Thank you in advance.
Texas Eagle 422
Currently riding on the Texas Eagle 422.
I am very grateful and thankful for my Roomette.
The Roomettes are very much worth every penny of the extra cost.
Very annoying when this happens (New York ->Boston)
I booked an acela direct train from New York to Boston (Sept 13) and was just informed that my itinerary may have to change due to construction work on the tracks. I may need to change in New Haven. Can anyone please tell me if it's gonna be a hassle?
I just booked this ticket last week and I can't believe they were selling tickets on that date when they knew about the construction work. If I had known this I'd have just booked a coach to Boston instead. Now the price for the coach may have jumped.
Now I don't even know how long it takes for them to finalise my itinerary. Can anyone share their experience if they go through the same thing? If I choose a refund I am going to lose some money in currency conversion. Can I ask for a compensation voucher in this matter?
Your help is deeply appreciated.
