So the friend who taught me how to be myself turned against me

When 11th grade started last year, I was this quiet, lonely kid. I had lost all my friends and was shifted to a new section, so sitting alone in a classroom full of unfamiliar people was extremely uncomfortable for me.

Then there was this boy—let’s call him “Perfect Boy.” He had a good body, a good mind, good marks, and, to top it all off, an amazing personality. He was friends with almost everyone, and I really liked that about him. But I didn’t actually know him, so I had no idea what to do.

Then, surprisingly, he approached me and offered me his friendship. I was genuinely hesitant at first because I didn’t have a very good history with people like him. People had judged me before for my looks and my personality, but he didn’t. He accepted me exactly as I was. He talked to me, included me, and eventually I became a part of his entire friend group.

Over time, a lot of things happened. I trusted him enough to tell him almost all of my secrets. I genuinely believed I could trust him. One of those secrets was about something that had happened between me and someone else, >!makeout!<. I never expected him to take something I had told him privately and share it with everyone in the group.

At first, I didn’t even know my secret was out. I only found out when someone came up to me with a completely twisted version of the story. It wasn’t even the exact thing that had happened anymore—it had been passed around, exaggerated, and turned into a rumour.

That broke something in me.

I didn’t want to confront anyone by exposing someone else’s secret either, because I wasn’t going to betray another person just to defend myself. Eventually, I realised that the person I had trusted had apparently told other people everything, and somehow something that was supposed to stay between a few people had spread throughout the school.

Honestly, I don’t even care about those people anymore. Right now, I only have a couple of months left here, and I have my own friends. That’s enough for me.

What still gets me sometimes is how immature someone can be, especially when they themselves talk about how important it is not to be judgmental, not to hurt people, and not to forget what someone has done for you. And yet, they do exactly the opposite.

It hurt me a lot at the time. But now? I’m over it.

Because honestly, who the hell has the time to keep caring about people who clearly didn’t care enough about you in the first place?
