I was reading this Maggie Kang interview and this part caught my attention:

>Then about six months into development, Sony Pictures Animation President Kristine Belson said she thought the idea was “bigger” and felt like it had “franchise potential” and suggested Kang make it into more of a four-quadrant film.

That was before Chris Appelhans was involved in the project. I had the idea that this movie was made without a sequel in mind, since everyone involved said they never expected the movie to have such an explosive popularity and the story ends satisfactorily with no unresolved big mystery/acomplishment as many other first movies of a franchise end.

Now that sequels were indeed in the mind of creators and executives while making the movie makes me think that there may be details that were made to be understood later, or some ambiguous points were made deliberately that way and not because the team ran out of time or budget.

Maybe the movie has some Chekhov’s guns that will be revealed later...
