It's still rough, and needs some refinements, more details but I'm building a collection of stories from newspaper archives and other records of the time and people to listen to while I prospect for gold along the Trinity around Willow Creek.

"The Loveliest Spot in California" is the introduction to a first draft of the story of the Sugar Bowl Ranch & Mine and the people who lived there. The narrator is fictional, some interactions guessed at, the rest is fact as the papers of the times presented them.

I'm so grateful for CloudFlare, this globally distributed bot swarm was causing havoc for my site and cost thousands in Aloglia charges. Every request from a different ip, a different corner of the planet, often the same request for something like "a red guitar near Canada" coming from 6 timezones across Asia and beyond within seconds - contemplating an Azure firewall that would double my monthly hosting costs.. And then I made the switch to CloudFlare and its all under my control again.

Anyhoo, this is a funny chart, it shows blocked requests over 3 days (excluding the AI's in the US). They wake up at 9PM PST, hammer the site for 16 hours, then take a nap before starting another day's work. Except Sundays, they sleep in for a bit, read the newspaper, then back at at it.

I'm trying to setup a self hosted Otel log/trace/metric sink and dashboard for a small set of web and worker apps. I've tried ClickStack, Grafana, and now OpenObserve and all three appear to have roughly the same general feature set for showing otel data.

But one piece they all seem to lack, which feels nuts is that is a standard "tail" and keyword search for logs like you find in Seq, Papertrail, other log systems. Everything is "run this query" and some log query syntax that I definitely don't want to have to learn when triaging some system issue.

So - do you have a preferred OTel solution that's inexpensive to self host at a small scale and a log interface that matches the sort of features purely log focused apps provide?
