Last night I was cleaning out my son's backpack because he left it on the kitchen table and I found a crumpled piece of paper at the bottom I almost threw it away without looking but something made me unfold it. It was a drawing of our family. There was my wife, my son, our dog and me. I was drawn in a suit standing next to a laptop above my head he'd written "Daddy working". I laughed at first but then I noticed something In the drawing everyone else was holding hands....I wasn't...I was standing a few inches away from them still holding my laptop. My son is seven He wasn't trying to make some profound statement about work and life balance He was just drawing what he sees That's when it hit me that children don't need us to explain our priorities... They watch them... They know what gets our attention They know what makes us put our phones down and what makes us say "Just five more minutes" I spent years telling myself that working hard was how I showed my family I loved them.. Maybe it was but love isn't only what you sacrifice for someone, sometimes it's what you're willing to stop doing for them So tonight when my son asked me to play with him I closed my laptop before he finished asking. He looked at me like I'd just performed a magic trick then he grabbed my hand and said "come on". I followed him into the living room the email could wait, the drawing couldn't.
