Activating Gig2 Synchronous ?

You guys did warn me not to switch from EE! But the lure of a Gig2 Synchronous service was too much!!

Door to Door salesman was shocking ... promised:

  • Hub5x - Modem mode is now available via a newly released firmware upgrade. Incorrect
  • Engineer doing your install will take off BT external entry point, and re-use fibre to centre of house. Incorrect.
  • The O2 SIM card is included. Incorrect, was an additional charge. Not needed, cancelled.

I know door-to-door salesmen will say anything. But what's worse, IF you cancel the installation on the day due to something the salesman said .... it reflects badly on the engineers, NOT the salesman. That's poor.

Website is massively frustrating ... all it wants to do is check my kit. There is no way to log a ticket, or contact support at all.

Anyway, back to my query ... Salesman told me that Gig2 synchronous was included in my package. When I queried why it was not on the order sheet, he said "Oh it's definitely synchronous, just a back-end issue".

I then queried the engineers before installation ... they checked and said "Yes, definitely on our order sheet".

Guess what, 2Gig down, 220Mbps Up.

Some research online suggests that it needs an engineer to activate. The cynical part of me thinks it's not part of the order, and I'll end up charged more to activate it.

Any VM Techies able to confirm best route to get it sorted?

I tried calling the offshore call centre and was told "Oh just wait 24-48 hours for it to settle". Don't think they quite got the problem!

Unifi Newbie - Down the rabbithole!

Hi All,

So following some earlier advice, I decided to ditch the EE (UK) provided Router with WiFi 7, and the associated Mesh Node which is also WiFi 7 but barely stays connected!

I purchased a UCG-Fiber, installed in the downstairs comms cupboard (centre of the house) where the fibre enters the property. Attached to the UCG-Fiber is a U7 Pro.

I have Cat8 run up the stairs into my Home Office with a Flex 2.5GbE POE switch.

Hanging off the Flex 2.5GbE POE switch is:

  • 1 x U7 Pro access point
  • 1 x Mac Mini M4 with a 2.5GbE USB-C NIC
  • ... and a couple of other laptops at gigabit.

Whilst the UCG-Fiber is a fantastic bit of kit, I'm finding that the WiFi speeds on the U7 Pro are poor in comparison to the EE WiFi 7 speeds. 600 Mbps on a WiFi 7 device, which previously would easily hit 1 Gbps. This is line of sight, 10 feet away from the U7 Pro.

Questions:

  1. Should I have got the U7 Pro XG, or are there settings to improve the U7 Pro?
    1. I've not messed with the config of the U7 Pro, besides adding a second SSID which is just 5Ghz and 6Ghz range, and turning off meshing.
  2. If so, should I future proof (to a certain extent) and get a 10GbE POE switch instead.
  3. Given the property is 8.5m / 30 ft square, brick and mortar, two storey house. Would getting one E7 access point serve better than two U7's?

... see I told you I'm rapidly disappearing down a Ubiquiti rabbit hole!!

Hub5x Modem Mode?

Hi All,

Yesterday had a VirginMedia salesman on my doorstep. I'm coming to the end of my EE 1.6Gb/s/120Mbps contract, and yearn for something synchronous. I access my home computers when working remotely.

I told the salesman that I needed a day to do some research, as I've just bought some Ubiquiti kit for around the house.

My research told me that the Hub2x which is supplied with the Gig2 service does not support modem mode. Mainly as it's a nextfibre service using XGS-PON, and seemingly harder to implement modem mode.

The workaround would usually be Double-NAT ... not great. Although, I have faith in the Unifi Cloud Gateway's firewall ... and could potentially put that into a DMZ to avoid Double-NAT.

When I sent a text message to the sales-man today, he replied:

"The Hub5x has recently had an update to support Modem Mode"

Can anyone confirm? He's returning at midday.

Thanks all.
