Unpopular Opinion: The Boys get the Bible wrong

Does anyone else ever want to write a carefully sourced email correcting the things, especially what Henry says, that are factually incorrect about the bible?

Warning: I am a cradle Catholic. (Yes, I know, pedophile priests, colonialism, etc, etc.… It makes me just as angry if not more so, because they are using a faith I genuinely love and believe in)

This urge overcame me because while listening to the new Gary Ridgeway episode today, someone, I think Henry, made an offhand comment to the effect that all the women in the Gospels are just there to tempt Jesus. This is not only demonstrably untrue, but in fact the only “temptress” in the Gospels is Salome, the daughter of Herodias and stepdaughter of Herod Antipas, and she and Jesus never meet.

All the other women in the Gospels are either disciples of Jesus, related to Jesus or his disciples, beneficiaries of Jesus’ miracles/ forgiveness, and/or characters in the Parables. (Source: https://catholic-resources.org/Bible/Synoptics_Women.htm)

Heck, in Matthew, Jesus full-on told someone, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.”

A lot of Christian misogyny comes from interpreting either Old Testament scriptures or St Paul out of context. This tendency towards the Madonna/Whore dichotomy in history appears in Christian theology in the centuries after Christ, if I recall correctly, after the religion allied with the Roman Empire under Constantine the Great. And all my homies think this was one of the biggest mistakes Christianity ever made and something the Catholic Church has been struggling to rectify over the last couple of centuries.

Alas, the Roman Catholic Church is a very big ship, and it takes time and significant effort to correct course.

I don’t apologize for this rant. You decided to read this far.

Pax et bonum.

Nest with eggs next to my front door, HELP!

A Carolina wren has laid eggs in the decorative bird house next to my front door. Do I need to stop using this door? I don’t want all the energy she put into reproducing to go to waste!

Who is Hazel?

When my mom first married my dad back in 1984, his aunt gave my mom a cookbook and pointed out this recipe in particular as a family favorite. It continues to be, but no one I have asked knows who Hazel is.

Gimme your best guesses in the comments.

(And my great aunt who recommended it is the Patsy who submitted it to the cookbook)

Edit: Since Reddit has eaten my pictures, I am transcribing the recipe here.

Hazel's Special

  • 1lb. hamburger
  • Chili powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Salt and Pepper
  • 1 pkg. corn tortillas
  • 1 can of cream of chicken soup (we always use cream of mushroom instead)
  • 1 can Ro-Tel tomatoes
  • 1 small onion
  • Cheese
  • 1 can Ranch Style beans

Brown meat and seasonings. Put 1/2 cup up(sic) tortillas in the tortillas in bottom of pan. Layer meat, beans and onions. Put remaining tortillas on top. Then add soup and tomatoes. Put cheese on top. Cover with foil. Bake 1 hour at 350°

Has anyone here experimented with using bingo daubers to ink linoleum blocks?

I work at a historic site and we’re gonna do a flag making craft for kids. To make the inking process a little easier and cleaner, we’re gonna use daubers to ink the flag blocks I carved. I have noticed in testing that the ink tends to move and clump when it sits for too long on the easy carve block.

While, these tests were on copy paper the craft will be done on cheap blank polyester flags so that may change how the ink is absorbed.

I’m considering about roughing the surface up a bit with some fine sand paper. Do y’all think that would help or ruin the block?

So I’m a coin collecting novice and I’m not particularly interested in “valuable coins” but unusual or historically interesting coins. As part of my job, I handle our cash. What kind of coins, still in circulation would be worth looking out for?

My late father always kept wheat pennies and the bicentennial quarters so I always swap those out in memory of him.
