In your experience, what are the different security levels like? What’s your preferred security level and gender to work with?
I just switched from a private security job to doing state corrections.
I am a 21 yr old female who started working for my state’s DOC. I had a choice between a male minimum that was 15 mins away and a females maximum that was almost an hour away and not suitable to drive to for my vehicle every day since it’s over the mountain. And they pay the same starting out so I chose the minimum.I also want something sustainable long term cause at the end of the day I wanna make a decent living, maybe build a career, not completely hate my job, and retire some day… those are my ultimate goals for being employed lol.
It’s honestly been so good so far. It’s also pretty tight knit, i really get to see the different roles in a prison, I also get to do a bunch of different roles since we’re smaller, and I feel mentored by the adults there that have been doing this for their entire career. There’s also younger people that have been there for 5+ years which is always a good sign. I realize this is not the typical experience due to the fact I’m at a minimum security facility that’s focused on work and most of what we deal with is drugs and gangs and a few inmates we need to keep a closer eye on but it’s just what was convenient for me to work at tbh. But the “adultier” adults give me so much good insight on the career and their experiences at different custody levels.
I’d like to try different security levels eventually! I do gotta stay here at least a year though before I can try another facility though.
