Florida DOC Female Officers

How common is sexual harassment by superiors? How do you/have you personally navigate/d this if it’s something you’ve experienced and successfully gotten to the other side of? Have you been successful or shunned after reporting it? How do you cope with it if dealing with it is a requisite part of the job? Have you been able to promote in spite of it?

I’m very interested in a career in corrections for various reasons however this is the thing I feel the most anxiety about. I’d really appreciate anyone who was willing to answer this honestly because I want to be the most prepared emotionally for what I’m really facing with respect to this situation.

Naturally, what I hope is that it’s not common but I hope that anyone who has had these experiences feels comfortable to be forthcoming about them. It is much appreciated.

In your experience, what are the different security levels like? What’s your preferred security level and gender to work with?

I just switched from a private security job to doing state corrections.

I am a 21 yr old female who started working for my state’s DOC. I had a choice between a male minimum that was 15 mins away and a females maximum that was almost an hour away and not suitable to drive to for my vehicle every day since it’s over the mountain. And they pay the same starting out so I chose the minimum.I also want something sustainable long term cause at the end of the day I wanna make a decent living, maybe build a career, not completely hate my job, and retire some day… those are my ultimate goals for being employed lol.

It’s honestly been so good so far. It’s also pretty tight knit, i really get to see the different roles in a prison, I also get to do a bunch of different roles since we’re smaller, and I feel mentored by the adults there that have been doing this for their entire career. There’s also younger people that have been there for 5+ years which is always a good sign. I realize this is not the typical experience due to the fact I’m at a minimum security facility that’s focused on work and most of what we deal with is drugs and gangs and a few inmates we need to keep a closer eye on but it’s just what was convenient for me to work at tbh. But the “adultier” adults give me so much good insight on the career and their experiences at different custody levels.

I’d like to try different security levels eventually! I do gotta stay here at least a year though before I can try another facility though.

Question....

I have been reading posts for a month now where people are looking for a JOB but see almost no one seeking a CAREER in corrections.... Seems very odd to me.

Then I see people worrying about a failure to disclose information that is important to HR...

I don't get it... Are the vast majority of people here simply looking for a paycheck that pays the most and requires little to no commitment, motivation to work, and where they will not break a sweat or do anything "extra"?

Again I don't see the word career .... I keep seeing the term JOB...

How cooked am I?

I finally was able to get in for a urinalysis and physical about a month after my interview for a non custody GS6 position. I filled out the stuff online for my public trust at the end of last week and sent it over the weekend. After my medical stuff this morning, I went to HR to return my paperwork and my HR specialist pulled me inside to talk about it as she had it printed out in front of her. She mentioned having to write long statements for explanations of why I was terminated from two places (one was illness related and one was from some past issues regarding attendance during a family hardship). She then mentioned that somewhere in the report I marked that I had not been terminated in the past 5 years. This was a mistake on my part, I overlooked it. I also didn’t disclose the disciplinary actions of termination in my in-person interview, which was also a mistake. These jobs were so long ago for me and so minuscule that I completely forgot about them until I was filling out the paper and spent 10 minutes writing out every job/supervisor before I filled it out digitally so I’d be prepared.

I was told to write statements and gather documentation. It would be sent off to the Regional Director and the warden to see if they want to approve it. I’m absolutely terrified. I’ve been very much looking forward to this position and it’s been a relief because I’ve had a hell of a time finding a new job since I left my last job in December. All of this was a complete accident and mistake and I’m worried that I’ve wasted all this time and effort.

How do you deal with concerns of retaliation from a problem inmate getting out?

I know a lot of people have different ideas of how to deal with this situation so I just want to gain some more insight here. Inmate a career violent criminal, claims "abuse" several times in the past, has a major chip on his shoulder. There has been talk about retribution on the people he thinks wronged him. What happens inside the walls and having fun with inmates and a baton sometimes is one thing but when things get real on the outside, its something that would have anyone concerned. Any tips on staying safe off the clock?

Background check (Psychedelics)

Hey guys 25M I tried LSD a couple times when i was 19 and mushrooms a very small dose when I was 21 haven’t done anything since I don’t drink I don’t smoke and I don’t have any long-term drug use ever in my history. I’m trying to apply for corrections, but I don’t think I should name the agency. Should I worry about this affecting my chances? of joining law-enforcement in general, since if they deny me, then I would carry this history of denial of this correctional agency to any other law-enforcement agency I would apply in the future.

Also, my dad used to call the cops on me as a strong arm tactic to get me to stop standing up to him when I was 17 through 19 and it led to no arrest no convictions of any kind just one time they took me in for psych examination and it didn’t lead to any admittance into any psych facility, they let me go just a couple days later

Should these things worrying me about getting denied and also do correctional agencies commonly use polygraphs?

Correctional Service Canada Interview

As the title says, I have an interview coming up for CX-01 in the CSC. I am looking for any potential advice or kind of layout the structure of the interview outside of what the email already states.

I understand they will test Core Competencies and working with others ETC…

I was kind of hoping for some clarity on what type of questions were you asked?

Is the structure similar to most federal Canadian interviews( they ask a question and give you a few minutes to structure your answer before answering )

Any advice or feedback is appreciated

rookie looking for advice

How do you deal with inmates constantly asking for shit. You help one inmate and they all seem to flock. I went off on some inmates yesterday and told them to “shut tf up” i know that’s probably not the smartest thing to do but i lost my cool.

FCI Coleman Commute

For those who work at Coleman, what’s your commute look like? Starting out in June and I’d like to be in between the Tampa airport and the facility. So I can at least fly back to see family. Is living in Tampa frowned upon? Or is that a far and exhausting commute.

New officer and I read “verbal judo” after many recommendations and I have some questions..

I found a lot of the advice seemed to apply more to police officers than corrections like for example it recommends to always ask someone to do something instead of telling them because this is more likely to gain cooperation. Obviously I have a lot to learn, but I would think inmates would view me as soft if I was just politely asking them to do tasks all day rather than telling them. It also said to never say things like “because I said so” or “because that’s policy” and to instead explain this is for safety or whatever the case may be. I cannot picture anyone I work with using these phrases and they are good officers. I understand how they could be effective outside the gate but are yall actually using these methods with inmates???

A possible downed duck

What does one do if the downed duck is the sergeants son and is considered "untouchable"?

On his first day, he admitted to being "a yn" just a couple weeks ago, (racing cars on city streets, street takeovers, buying untraceable guns outta trunks, and hanging with the wrong crowd). Now, he likes to work certain units calling inmates 'unprofessional' words imo. Talking to them like he knows them from the street. He constantly sleeping on the job and ducks work as much as possible. I steer clear of him as much as I can.

Is anyone tired of soft officers?

It’s getting old man. I look around at the majority of CO’s that work with me and they are just scared to death to work here. Afraid of altercation. These inmates just do whatever the hell they want to do. I can think of 2 people I can count on to assist me out of my crew. I got into altercation a week ago in the chow hall and the other officer just stood there scared to death. He froze. I had to get on the radio myself and call for back up.

I heard a CO literally say please get back to your rack before I write you up. I don’t want to but I will if I have to. I’m like what????? Tell him he’s got about 3 seconds to get to his rack or his pod is going to get real hot.

I was talking to inmate when I look and I see an inmate yelling at a CO. He punches him and RAN AWAY fast as he could calling for help on the radio. Like it was a middle school bully or something.

I don’t know. It’s exhausting. I’m not saying be a dickhead to everyone but holy shit. Grow a spine people. Get out of corrections if you’re scared to do your job.

Anyone else dealing with this?

i need advice how can i get a mirror polish

My steps have been to build the base layers first
After the base, I used an 80/20 water-and-alcohol mix with a small amount of Kiwi Parade Gloss
Then I horsehair brushed the polish and repeated the process
For the picture, I only buffed it using an old 100% cotton shirt

i feel like there is to many small scratches i used a lighter once but i got scared i was gonna melt it off even thought i didnt hold it for to long
