HERS Test (CA HVAC)

The company we are leaning towards going with gave us two prices.

  • One, without permits and HERS test.
  • Two, about $1000.00 more, with permits and HERS test.

I could also go and get my own permit, but the big thing is the HERS test.

When they first put the HVAC system up on the roof in 2008, was there HERS? What is involved? This house is a big mess of a project, we got a good deal on it because it's a project (for example, there were no floors when we moved it, it was just concrete). There's some "micky mouse" going on in the electrical work and we were saving up to hire a proper electrician to work through that before our HVAC shit the bed.

If I do the HERS test and it fails, am I going to be on the hook for a bunch of expensive repairs that I can little afford, in the desert, with an AC system that doesn't work? So, I'm not asking, should I skip it to save $1000.00, I'm asking, should I skip it to save, potentially, a whole lot more money, time, and trouble (and I could be borrowing trouble, maybe everything is perfect)?

2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid EX Battery tested "good," after having dropped to ~8V overnight. Parts stores say "bad starter." Does this make sense?

I'm hoping someone with Honda hybrid experience can help me think this through.

Vehicle:

  • 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid EX
  • Original 12V battery (about 5 years old)

What happened:

  • Car would not start.
  • Dashboard displayed "Electric Brake System Problem" and other warning messages.
  • Measured the 12V battery before attempting a jump: a little over 8 volts.
  • Jump-started the vehicle, and it started immediately.
  • Once running, all warning messages disappeared.
  • Charging voltage while running was about 14 volts.

I then took it to both AutoZone and O'Reilly Auto Parts (separately, without telling either store what the other had found). Both tested:

  • Battery: Good
  • Alternator: Good
  • Starter: Bad

This is where I'm confused.

My understanding is that the CR-V Hybrid doesn't use a conventional starter motor like a non-hybrid vehicle. Is it possible that these parts-store testers are misinterpreting something on a hybrid?

Also, if the battery was sitting at only about 8 volts after less than 24 hours, would you suspect:

  1. the original 12V battery has simply reached the end of its life,
  2. a parasitic electrical drain,
  3. an actual hybrid starting system problem, or
  4. something else entirely?

If you've seen this exact symptom on a CR-V Hybrid, I'd appreciate hearing what the actual fix turned out to be.

Hotsprings Limelight Flair (2019): Leak

Woke up this morning and noticed a leak from the bottom of my Hotsprings Limelight Flair hot tub. It's a 2019.

The evidence is a puddle of water of water on the ground next to the spa. I think I've lost about 1" since last night.

My spa guy doesn't turn on his phone/come on duty for another couple of hours. Anything I can do in the meantime?

  • I just changed the Salt System Cartridge last night and had some trouble getting it seated correctly. Just a coincidence?
  • Should I turn it off or leave it on?
  • Anything else?

Edited to add:

I did some more trouble shooting and I noticed that the puddle near the right side of the spa is getting bigger, water is flowing, when the jets are running. Seems pressure related. And then my wife told me that she noticed the puddle yesterday, before I tried to change the cartridge, so that's probably just a coincidence.

FIRE Represents Florida Professor Fired for Assigning a Profane Story

Of all the things that could be said about this story: "Florida Professor Fired for Assigning a Profane Story, Lawsuit Says", what stands out to me is that FIRE is representing the professor. Though often dismissed as a right-wing organization, FIRE's mission is to defend free expression regardless of the viewpoint being expressed. I feel this personally because I've had my college's president say straight to my face that she think's they're nothing but right-wing hacks.

As professors, we should be willing, as a matter of principle, not politics, to stand with our colleagues and defend their right to express themselves, whether we agree with them or not.

Furthermore, since I assign Antigone and Malcolm X, if I'm not making someone uncomfortable, I've either got the most jaded students in the world or I've got to get better material.

Soliciting Recommendations: Texas Summer Camps

Just got back from summer camp. Starting to plan next year's summer camp. Someone suggested looking at Texas (we're Southern California).

Last year I met some Texas troops at one of our Southern California camps and they said that while Texas has some beautiful, renovated facilities at some of their camps, the weather during summer is just too brutal for an enjoyable experience. We tend to go to camps that are either in the mountains at or above 5000' or on an island in the Pacific.

Any ideas of suggestions?
