Is relocating for a correctional officer job worth it?

I’m having an extremely difficult time finding a job in the field I studied, so I’m considering applying to become a correctional officer with Ontario Corrections.

The pay, overtime opportunities, benefits, pension, and job security are all very attractive to me.

I currently live in Toronto, but unfortunately, most of the correctional officer positions available right now are outside the GTA. I’ve seen openings in places like Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Timmins, and Barrie.

Would it be worth relocating to one of these cities for a correctional officer job? I’d especially like to hear from anyone who has worked in Ontario Corrections or relocated for the job.

I can only get a job through connections or referrals. Is that normal?

Got my first job as a diesel apprentice at my uncle’s shop right out of high school. From there I moved to dealerships with referrals from my uncle and now I finally got an offer from the TTC as a licensed tech with a referral from my former supervisor who got a management job within the TTC.

I tried applying for higher paying positions on my own but can never get past the interview stage. I probably submitted over 100 applications and did 20 interviews.
Is that normal? I feel like an utter failure

Receiving a $2 Million Life Insurance Payout After My Brother’s Passing

My brother passed away this April at the age of 31. He was a mechanic. About two days ago, my mom told me that he had taken out a $2 million term life insurance policy about 3 years ago and named the two of us as beneficiaries, 50/50. Assuming the claim is paid, we would each receive approximately $1 million.
I’m still trying to process everything emotionally, and now I’m also trying to think through the financial side responsibly.

For context, I’m 25 years old, single, and live in Toronto. I’m a registered nurse earning about $105,000 per year. I rent my home, have around $20,000 in savings, and have zero debt.

My mom is a retired nurse with an annual income of about $75,000 and owns her own home with no debt/mortgage. She’s also trying to figure out the best way to manage this unexpected inheritance.

I know this is an incredibly fortunate financial position to be in despite the tragic circumstances, and I don’t want to make impulsive decisions. My initial thoughts are to invest most of the money, potentially buy a home at some point, and continue working as normal.

For those who have experience with large inheritances or life insurance payouts, how would you approach planning for this?

AITA for excluding this one person from our friend group to a fishing trip?

Recently some of my friends in our group took an interest in fishing out of nowhere. I’m the only person who fished before and knows all the good spots around our province. Nice secluded locations that can guarantee couple of catches. So I agreed to take the group (4 people) to my usual spot and teach them the basics.

First thing I asked everyone is to get their fishing license. It’s super easy. It’s just an online application that takes less than three minutes and costs less than $50 for a year’s license. I also told them to buy a cheap Walmart rod and a little tackle box with all the accessories.

One of them complained and questioned why he needed a license in the first place. I told him that without a license, you’ll be fined if a conservation officer asks for it. He just lies to me the next day and says “yeah I got it bro, passed the test.” I was like, ok…. I know for a fact that getting a fishing license in Ontario only requires a short application and zero tests. It’s just putting in your name, address, and paying for it. He’s a compulsive liar but I honestly didn’t give a shit if he gets the license or not. I’m not the one that’s going to get a fine.

Now skipping forward to actual day where we went to the spot to start fishing. He brought over snacks, alcohol, weed, and fast food. The day goes by fine, most of us catch something and they all learned the basics. The sun was setting so we get ready to pack up. Everyone was picking up after themselves but this guy just left all his garbage on the ground. Snack wrappers, beer cans, and even a lighter. I told him to pick up after himself and he says “stop being such a female bro, they have people who get paid to clean it.” I’m not a confrontational person so i just grab my garbage bag and picked his garbage up for him.

They all liked the experience, so they asked me to take them again. I told the other three that I’m not inviting that guy again because he’s a pain in my ass and i go fishing to relax, not get stressed over an asshole leaving garbage everywhere. So we made another group chat just for fishing trips. He texts the main group chat about the next trip but we just lie and tell him we’re too busy etc.

I know I should tell him, but I have no energy to deal with drama.

Graduating the truck and coach diploma program at centennial soon, struggling to get an apprenticeship/job. Any advice?

I’m graduating the with a diploma in Motive Power- Truck and Coach Technician in August. I’ve applied to dozens of jobs for which I qualify for but I keep getting rejected or not getting a callback. I’m located in the GTA.

I even applied for non-apprentice positions, like Diesel Lube tech, Fueler/washer position at Penske & Ryder, and as a helper at smaller shops. Still, I have zero luck.

I already own some hand and power tools and have an ODP certification.

Any advice? Unfortunately, I don’t have any real work experience. So that is my biggest issue with getting a job.
