Update- I listened to you all

Few weeks ago I had posted if I should sign up for the teaching in Asia program (Taiwan especially) and a lot of you said yes so I did 🥳🥳 I received an email for next steps and honestly I am nervous and also excited !!

Interestingly they also just released new programs for Italy and France that are shorter (3-9) months and now I wish I waited before deciding. Esp cuz these only require you to be in your final year of Bachelors. Nevertheless I think I made the correct decision because I would love to explore Asia more.

Excited to see what the future holds!! Thanks guys I def needed a little push and so glad I received it on the post :))

Has anyone noticed bias or preferences in security guard hiring

Hi everyone, I’ve been applying for security guard jobs for months and still haven’t had any luck finding work. I have 5 years of experience, drive, and I’m 6’4” and physically fit, which makes the situation even more confusing and discouraging for me.

What’s hard is seeing people who seem much smaller or less physically suited for the role getting hired while I can’t even get callbacks. I know security work is about more than size, professionalism matters too, but physical presence has always been considered an advantage in this field so it’s frustrating feeling overlooked despite bringing both experience and that presence.

I’ve started wondering whether hiring priorities in the industry have changed or if employers are mainly hiring through certain networks or preferences now. I’m not trying to attack anyone, genuinely trying to understand why it’s become so difficult to get hired lately.

Has anyone else in security experienced this recently?

60 job applications 3 interviews hired laid off in 2 weeks. Is the Canadian tech market completely broken?

I’ve applied to 60+ jobs over the past few months. Out of all those applications, I got only 3 interviews, was selected for 2 roles, and finally accepted a contract position with a major US bank.

I honestly felt relieved for the first time in months. Then reality hit.

Joined the project, worked for just 2 weeks, and got let go because the project was suddenly ramping down.

At this point, I seriously don’t know what’s happening with the tech market in Canada. It’s exhausting mentally and emotionally trying to stay positive every single day.

Any other iOS or Android developers dealing with the same thing right now?

120 Job Applications as a University Student in Ontario Here’s What Actually Happened

120 Job Applications. 5 Interviews. Zero Summer Jobs. Welcome to the Ontario Job Market at 20.

I’m a 20-year-old university student in Newmarket. All I wanted was a summer job.

Over the past several weeks I submitted over 120 job applications. Not mass-blast copy-paste applications — every single one had a fully tailored resume and cover letter, written specifically for that role, using the exact language from the job posting, optimized to pass AI screening tools. We’re talking 70+ individual documents across landscaping, warehouse work, retail, automotive, hospitality, and more.

From 120 applications I got 5 interviews. Here’s how each one went.

HOME DEPOT

Applied for a Merchandising Associate role. Got the interview, did my best, and the next day they let me know it wasn’t a fit. Honestly? Respect. Fast, clear, no games. Home Depot communicated better than most companies I dealt with through this entire process. Didn’t get the job but at least I knew where I stood.

SOUTHLAKE HEALTH FOUNDATION — Hospital Data Student

One of the roles I genuinely cared about. Community institution, real data work, meaningful mission. Interview went well. Still waiting.

CAR DEALERSHIP — Lot Attendant

Interviewed for a lot attendant role. Moving vehicles, keeping the lot organized, supporting the sales team. Clean process, professional interview, straightforward role that matched my background perfectly.

WILD FORK FOODS — This One Deserves Its Own Section

The store manager interviewed me in person at the Newmarket location. It went great. He told me he’d love to have me at his store and that he wanted to work with me. I left feeling like the job was basically mine.

Then Wild Fork decided that for an $18.50/hour entry-level retail position, one interview with the actual manager wasn’t enough.

I got called back for a panel interview with the Northeast Leadership Team — senior HR and regional management from across North America on a video call — asking me things like:

“What would your friends say about you?”
“Describe a time you demonstrated leadership.”
“What does customer service mean to you?”

These are questions I’d expect applying to be a regional director. I was applying to help customers pick out a ribeye.

I answered everything well. The head of HR recruitment — Lady 1 — told me she’d have a decision by Monday.

Monday — nothing. Tuesday — nothing. Wednesday morning I sent a polite follow-up email. By end of day Wednesday, still nothing.

A manager looked me in the eye and told me he wanted me on his team. A North American panel interviewed me for $18.50/hr. Lady 1 promised Monday. Complete silence.

CENSUS CANADA — The One That Actually Offered Me the Job

Statistics Canada reached out and gave me a conditional job offer for census field operations in Newmarket. Lady 2, my assigned Crew Leader, called me directly, congratulated me, and asked me to confirm my acceptance by email that day. I did.

Then Lady 2 stopped responding.

The stated start date — May 20 — came and went. I followed up through Lady 3, my original StatsCan coordinator. Professional email, clear timeline, referenced all the right names and details.

Lady 3 didn’t respond either.

The Government of Canada offered me a job, I accepted it, the start date passed, and two separate contacts went completely silent.

THE REAL TALK

4.2% interview rate from 120 tailored applications isn’t a “you” problem. The system is broken.

AI screening tools kill your resume before a human reads it. Employers blast postings to thousands of people and then drown in applications. And when you DO get through, you face a two-round corporate interview gauntlet for positions paying under $20/hour.

The Wild Fork situation is the perfect symbol of what’s wrong. The store manager — the actual human who will work with you, who assessed your fit, who made a hiring decision — apparently isn’t empowered to just hire you. A continent-wide executive panel has to convene to decide if a 20-year-old from Newmarket can stock shelves.

And Census Canada ghosting someone after a confirmed job offer is just embarrassing for a federal institution.

I’m still applying. But if you’re a student or young adult going through this right now — you’re not crazy, you’re not doing it wrong, and you’re not alone. The process itself is the problem.

TL;DR: 120 apps, 5 interviews, rejected by Home Depot (fair and fast), ghosted by Wild Fork HR after a continental executive panel, and the Government of Canada offered me a job and then disappeared.

Drop your own stories below. Curious if anyone else has been put through a multi-round interview process for a sub-$20/hr job lately.

Out of My Mind

Hungry, disabled, applied to hundreds of jobs, rewritten my cover letter hundreds of times. Gone physically, called after, searched by same day jobs. Near tears. Totally out of it. Going to classes (19 yu) starving with no food because I promised myself I would find a job and stop relying on the food bank. Instead im relying on an empty stomach. Everyone in class has a laptop.

Employment agencies, campus career center, followed the tips but i am at my limit.

Everyone seems to be in a much better position (yorku near campus).

About to go to class again, food bank closed for days straight, worried i might cry my head out like a psycho, no heat in my home. I cant take poverty. I cant take it.

No interviews except for deviljobs. Nothing except for deviljobs. Legit nothing except 5 to 10 deviljobs in over a gear.

Job market’s been rough lately so I started doing small cleaning gigs on the side

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to post a quick update since my last post about looking for work.

I’ve been applying everywhere like a lot of people right now, and it’s honestly been tougher than expected landing something stable.

So I’ve decided to start doing small-scale cleaning work on the side in the meantime. I’ve always been pretty particular about keeping things clean/organized at home, and I’ve done casual cleaning jobs over the years for extra cash (houses, small spaces, etc.).

If anyone needs help with cleaning (homes, offices, small businesses, Airbnbs, etc.) or knows someone who does, feel free to reach out. Even small gigs help right now.

Appreciate anyone who reads this, and good luck to everyone out there grinding right now.

“End of the Old Order” - Has Job Searching Fundamentally Changed?

Does anyone else see this? It reminds me of PM Carney’s Davos speech.

End of the Old Order The old job search approach is fading: generic resumes, generic cover letters, mass applying, and only changing the company name or job title.

That may have worked before, but ATS systems, AI screening, recruiter filters, and high application volume have changed the game.

A Rupture, Not a Transition

This is not going back to the old way.

We now need tailored resumes, stronger keywords, clear metrics, better LinkedIn alignment, and a more strategic approach to applications.

Call to Action

Adapt

The advantage goes to candidates who understand the new system, adjust quickly, and show employers exactly how they match the role.

Thisbis not a political push or post by any means. I'm not saying that this new to me. I've seen it a while now.im saying how close its meaning and similarity to Carney's speech.

Are you submitting a cover letter with your applications?

I've seen this for sometime and wanted to share/address. This post may not be for everyone. If you are using it great. If not and information shared here helps. Even better.

-- A lot of job seekers skip them completely. In some cases that’s fine. In others, it’s costing you to not get past the computers (IF they're using ATS /AI) much less an interview.

A cover letter is important MOST when:

  • You’re changing careers
  • You don’t perfectly match the posting
  • You’re applying to government, OPS, City of Toronto, non-profit, or management roles
  • You have employment gaps
  • You want to explain why YOU fit this specific role

A bad cover letter:

“Please find attached my resume…”

A better cover letter:*

  • Mentions the actual role/company
  • Mirrors keywords from the posting
  • Gives 1-2 strong examples with results/metrics
  • Explains why your background aligns
  • Sounds human, not copied from ChatGPT

Simple structure:

  1. Intro → role + why interested
  2. Middle → 2 examples that match the job
  3. Closing → confidence + interest in interview

You do NOT need a 2-page essay.

Most good cover letters are 3-5 focused paragraphs tailored to the posting.

Question:

Are you submitting cover letters? And do you think they’ve actually helped you get interviews?

**Please see below an example of a coverltter template to get you started

I need help with my business idea

Hey ya'll, I wanted to start a small pop up pop-corn stand next summer, and was contemplating if I could sell my stuff near Eaton Centre or literally on the square, but I'm not able to find any resources about that. I know all the permits I should need but I don't know if I need special permission, or its not allowed? Any help would mean a ton to me as its my dream, even if its other places that still got traffic to sell.

Just a reminder Indeed is almost useless

Besides finding openings there and applying only directly through the company website there is little use for Indeed.

Don't be sending out applications through Indeed. I applied to this company on Indeed couple months ago when I did not know this. Got rejected of course.

Now this past weekend I received a sponsored ad on my Gmail for that same company. I clicked on it and applied directly on their company website. Got an email today to book my in person interview.

Companies still not listing salaries

Is anyone else seeing that certain companies are still not posting the salary ranges despite being legally obligated to do so? Big companies like Ernst Young are still non-compliant and it's infuriating. They had plenty of time to implement this and are facing seemingly no repercussions.

Edited: Original example used was Scotiabank and as a federally regulated company they are exempt.

Are You Applying for Jobs… or Just Feeding Indeed’s Black Hole?

* Sharing this for viability. Some folks know. And some don't.

** If you have similar suggestions for these platforms please share.

Indeed, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, and a like are great tools for finding jobs, companies hiring, salary info, and setting up job alerts. Or just keepikg up to date on news etc... But, I would avoid using them as the actual application method whenever possible.

**Use them as a notification system only.**

Once you find the posting, go directly to the company’s website/careers page and apply there instead of using Easy Apply on these platforms.

A very high number of Indeed/LinkedIn applications feel like they disappear into a black hole. Some postings are expired, poorly synced (behind the scenes), overloaded with applicants, or not monitored properly. It makes you feel ghosted when in reality the process may just be broken.

Also, apply early. The first 24 hours is important, I wouldn't say specifically GTHA/Toronto postings but all area and grt ahead of the ball. Set alerts so you see jobs quickly, then go directly to the employer website and apply there.

With high probability of some companies (smaller to medium) may higher and onboard before the end of the *posting date* . Yeah thats a bit screwy, but they make their rules and do as they wish.

Would you take a job that’s 100 percent commission based?

I had an interview today for this company and they sent me a message saying they’d like to offer me a position, but the role is 100 percent commission with no base pay or hourly wage at all. I’m pretty worried about that. The guy interviewing me said that I could make 600-1500 a week but I don’t know. I’m skeptical about accepting it and I’m actually leaning towards turning it down. Does anyone here have any experiences with a job like this? The job itself is a marketing job that has to do with humanitarian agencies

I need help at this point

I have been looking for a job for months now, and it feels like I'm applying into an abyss where my resume goes to die. Got very few call backs and even when those go very well, I ace the assessments and interviews, I still don't hear back.

I have 7+ years of administrative and operations experience across multiple industries including startups, retails, education and non-profits. I have a BA in English and a diploma in business management and I speak English, French and Arabic.

I started applying to jobs that would actually advance my career such as operations manager, operations lead, senior administrative roles...etc, but then worked my way down to entry level jobs such as bilingual customer service and sales.

Like I said, I had some call backs, I did some assessments, I had excellent results for a French assessment (54 wpm with 100% accuracy, 90%+ on several language skills) and a general skill assessment (95th percentile in time management, 90th percentile in Communication and 87th percentile in problem solving)

It's still been hard to find a job, so I'm trying to post here, if anyone is hiring for someone to handle the admin aspect of things, operations, or looking for a multilingual sales or customer service professional, DM me and I can share my CV

Your Opinion Matters!

Hey Toronto — I’m looking for feedback on an idea we’re building called City Helpers Inc.

The idea came after a close family member had a stroke and suddenly simple things became difficult:

  • moving heavy items
  • cutting grass
  • small home repairs
  • cleaning garages
  • help loading/unloading
  • odd jobs around the house

We realised there are also thousands of students, part-time workers, tradespeople, and people looking for extra income who would gladly help if there was a trusted way to connect with everyone.

So we’re building a platform where:

  • homeowners and seniors can find vetted local helpers
  • workers can pick up flexible jobs and earn extra cash
  • businesses can access a database of workers when they need extra help

We’re are launching in Toronto because of the size, diversity, and energy of the city.

Before we go further, I’d genuinely like feedback from people here:

  • Would you use something like this?
  • What would make you trust it?
  • What would concern you?
  • If you wanted extra income, would you sign up for flexible local jobs?

Trying to build something that actually helps people while creating work opportunities at the same time.

Would appreciate honest feedback from Toronto residents.

Is this CV/resume format okay for US job applications?

Hi everyone! I’m planning to apply for jobs in the US and wanted to get feedback on whether this resume/CV format would work well there.

For those familiar with US hiring standards, does this layout look acceptable, or would you recommend any changes? I’d appreciate advice on formatting, ATS-friendliness, or anything that could improve my chances.

Thanks!
