[ Speaker calls Listener]

“Hey babe…”

[Speaker pauses ]

“Wait, you did tell me I couldn't call you that anymore. Okay, my bad but just one question and I don't hang up. It's really serious and I really need to know. I've been trying to fall asleep and it's been a little hard. I just really want to know, do you kinda love me still?”

[Listener hangs up in Speaker ear ]

“Hey don't hang up! I swear it's nothing crazy this time. It's just that it's flu season and I need you to remember to take your allergy medication because you always forget until it's too late and your eyes start watering in the middle of the night. “

[Listener hangs up abruptly ]

[Sound of the beep to start recording]

“Hey, thanks for unblocking me. Have you stocked up on your allergy medication? I'm not trying to be annoying but I just sneeze and that reminded me of you. Please take your meds.”

[Phone hangs up]

[Speaker calls Listener]

“I actually glimpsed you at the coffee shop yesterday. I didn't want to risk you blocking me again so I didn't say anything. But Brad serving you the mocha latte isn't funnier than me.”

“Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait! Please don't hang up. I do have something important to tell you, just give me 15 seconds I swear.”

“ Thanks … So 2 nuns walk in a bar -”

[Phone hangs up]

“Hey it's been 2 months but I just wanted to check in. I heard about Lacey. I'm sorry she's not doing well. I sent her treats. You should get them tomorrow so could you tell her it's from me? she'll know anyway since I slept with the bag last night so she'll know it's me even if you don't tell her.”

“It's not THAT weird.”

“I wouldn't have to do that if I could trust you to deliver the message.”

“You know I can take her to the vet and stuff if you want…. You know, since my job is more flexible than yours.”

“Not pushing it or anything. Just an open invitation. I love Lacey too.”

[Call disconnects]

[Listener calls Speaker this time and he picks up immediately, surprised that she would reach out first ]

“Uhhh hey. Are you alright?”

“No worries, I told you it would be no problem. Do you want me to come over and get her or…”

“I'll get to you in 20 minutes. Is that good?”

“Alright, I'll be there.”

[Phone hangs up]

[Voicemail Beep]

“Hey, Lacey and I are done with her appointment. I tried texting you and calling but you didn't respond so I am guessing you're in a meeting. You can swing by my place to pick her up. I'll keep her entertained until you get here so you don't have to worry. See you when you get here. Bye .”

[Listener calls]

“Hey, home already?”

“Well not really. I wasn't expecting you to call me since I already gave you all the details from the vet about Lacey.”

“I'm sorry I had to be the bearer of bad news. You two should get some rest, okay?”

“You're welcome… anytime. Good night.”

[Phone hangs up]

[Speaker calls ]

“Hey, just wanted to see how you were holding up. And to check up on Lacey.”

“That's not too bad .”

“I'm really sorry this is happening to you. I know how much you love her. If you need anything, you can call me anytime.”

[Phone hangs up]

[Listener call, Speaker answers a bit jittery]

“Hey what's up. Sorry I took so long I was-”

[Speaker is cut off by Listener's sobs]

“Hey, Hey sweetie what happened? Did Lacey…”

“I'm so sorry.”

“When did it happen?”

“She was with her favourite person right to the end. That's what she would have wanted. You gave her everything you could baby. You remember what the vet said. There was nothing more you could have done.”

“I know. I'm so sorry.”

[ Listener's questions stuns Speaker for a bit]

“Uhhh yeah I can come over.”

“Just give me a sec . I'll be over in 30.”

[Almost nervous]

“Yeah it's alright. I'm coming. I'll see you soon.”

“Bye.”

[Phone hangs up]

[Speaker calls]

“Just stepped in.”

“No, you really don't have to apologize. I would have stayed since you asked. You didn't convince me. Either way I would have still been there for you.”

“It was nice seeing you for longer than 10 minutes again .”

“I hope the weekend is good to you.”

“Yeah bye.”

[Phone hangs up]

[Listener calls]

“Hey , everything alright? You don't sound too good.”

“Oh you finally got my package. Was it a bad time?”

“Well when I carried Lacey to the vet, the results really weren't good. I knew it was coming so we went to do some arts and crafts. That's why I spent the day with her,we were busy. I did the paw and snout impressions with air dried clay then I did record playing with her for a while because I planned to go to Build-A-Bear. She was way too tired so I didn't get her barking or anything like that. If I asked you for a video it would have given it all away. I wouldn't be able to explain why I need a video of your dog barking. Took me a couple days to put it all together. I tried to get a stuffed animal that resembled Lacey the most.”

“I had to time it . I didn't want to give it to you the moment she died. It just felt too sudden, like it would have made you feel worse.”

“I know how much she means to you. I loved her too, I miss her too.”

“I should thank you for letting us hang out one last time.”

“I hope it helps you . I really do .”

“ Umm hey. I know I just left your place and everything but I wasn't brave enough to say it to your face. Truth is, I never wanted to get over you and I don't know if I can keep doing this with you if that's never going to happen for us. It's really painful. I don't want this to stop but I know that hanging on knowing that it might go nowhere will break me even further. I know what I want from us but what do you want from us?”

“I don't think I should stay the night again till we answer that.”

“I'm sorry.”

[Speaker hangs up]

[Phone call ends]

[Listener calls, Speaker tries to be neutral sadness and longing in his voice]

“Hey, I guess you got them.”

“I didn't have the heart to cancel the service. Happy birthday.”

“You're welcome.”

“I know we haven't spoken since THAT night but I wouldn't forget your birthday.”

“Well I was trying to give us some space. You know you never answered my question plus you were in a very vulnerable part in your life. I didn't want it to influence your decisions so I took a step back.”

“And that's fine. I'm not asking you to know now . But I know doing all that definitely won't help. So it's fine . Truly.”

“Please don't do this on your birthday. Just forget it and enjoy yourself, okay?”

“But my feelings never went away and it's eating me up inside. I'm trying so hard to respect and keep the boundaries but it's like I'm betraying my very being. But I'm not sure where I stand with you. I realized when I would call you baby and you wouldn't hang up on me . I just tried pushing my luck a bit and you stopped pushing back but you never actually said anything so I didn't want to read into it.”

“Then you kept inviting me over , and I kept staying the night but we didn't have a name.”

“I LOVE labels. I WANT to know what we are. I want us to be something that's not this. I want you to be mine . That's the label I want you to have.”

[Speaker is lost in thought as he cracks eggs into the sizzling pan]

Speaker's Thoughts: “I can't believe that I screwed up again. I can't believe I ruined everything. It was going so well. What even possessed me to do that? Why do I keep ruining everything?”

[The sizzle turned into a harsh sear as Speaker gets lost and the eggs burn in the pan]

Speaker’s Thoughts: “I was greedy again. Wanting more than what was given to me. Just like last time. There might never be a next time after this. I keep wanting more and it's ruining everything.”

[The beeping of the smoke alarm fades to the back of Speaker's mind before Listener’s shout snaps him back . The sound of the beeps now loud in his ear]

[Confusion in his voice ]

“Huh? What the–”

[Speaker realizes the situation and quickly turns off the stove, the smoke making him cough. He absent mindedly grabs the hot handle]

“Ahhh! Dammit!”

[He curses and the pot falls to the ground with a bang. The smoke alarm beeps as Speaker breathes heavily between coughs. Listener comes in and turns off the alarm. Seeing her Speaker becomes overwhelmed and emotional and begins to apologize softly]

“I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to.”

…

“I forgot it was hot and dropped it by mistake. I'm sorry for the commotion. I'm sorry for the mess, I'll clean up right no–”

[Listener stops him, picking up the pot and putting it in the sink. She throws the charred eggs in the rubbish before turning on the faucet to put Speaker's hand under the water]

[Speaker mumbles out]

“I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention and I ruined breakfast. I didn't mean to mess it up. I didn't mean to mess up again.”

…

[Listener cut through his apologies and asks about his hand ]

“My… my hand ?”

[Speaker's attention is finally brought to his injury]

“Oh … I…I didn't realize… I forgot. I felt it but I just didn't…”

[He trails off]

“It does feel better. Thank you.”

…

“I just wasn't thinking straight, that's all. It's not that bad.”

[There's a knock to the door that makes Speaker immediately clear his throat]

“I'll get it.”

[His voice perks up as he opens the door]

“ Hey Mr. Walker!”

…

“Just a clumsy morning. I'm so sorry. Just some burnt breakfast. It's nothing serious, I promise.”

…

“Yeah she's alright. Clumsy ‘ol me caused it .”

…

“I'm fine. Didn't mean to startle you.”

[Speaker jokes]

“That new upgrade gave you superman level hearing huh? Thanks for checking. ”

“Alright, take care!”

[Speaker closes the door, his voice dropping before speaking to Listener]

“He was just checking in. I should open the windows, the smoke is terrible.”

[Speaker is consumed by his thoughts again as he opens up the windows]

Speaker’s Thoughts: “Great ! Now it's even worse. What is happening to me? Am I allergic to a good job ? Am I allergic to success in anything ? I could set myself and the whole place on fire and I wouldn't have realized if she didn't yell. She's never yelled before and I made her yell at me.”

[Speaker is pulled out of his thoughts once more by Listener]

“Ahh yeah?”

…

“Umm oh . Just some fresh air. Thank you for cleaning up . I was going to do it after I opened up . I guess I got a bit caught up again. Sorry.”

…

[Speaker sinks into the couch with a deep side]

…

“Everything is wrong .”

…

“Things aren't the same anymore. Ever since THAT day.”

…

“Everything has completely changed and I barely know how to function these days. I am drowning in silence and in my own thoughts. I make breakfast in silence, we eat together in silence, we watch TV in silence, I do your hair in silence, we take our walks in silence, come back to silence and the day ends in silence. Since you laughed with me that day, you haven't even smiled again.”

[ Speaker takes a deep breath to center himself]

“We barely speak to each other. Something changed that day, I'm not sure I can fix it. I'm not blaming you at all. It's just … a lot to face .”

…

“You keep me around but then you never really acknowledge me. I'm happy to be around you but I can't focus on that feeling because I don't know where I stand and I'm just waiting in limbo for the worst to happen.”

“And now all I do is burn everything it seems. I just don't know what to do. I just know I want to wait on you.”

“I don't know how long that might be but I know I still want to do it .”

…

“I get that this is…unusual. How things started out , how things ended up and all that.”

“Oh .”

“I never thought about that.”

“You've been on auto pilot for weeks. You just started getting back into your routine. Makes sense how it ended up hitting you all at once.”

“I didn't think it through enough. I always end up making bad decisions when I get too greedy. And since meeting you, I do feel like a glutton because no matter how much I get… I still end up wanting a little bit more every time.”

[ Speaker gives a shallow laugh]

“I feel as if I'm confessing all over again.”

“ When you yelled out ‘SMOKE!’, it took me out of my head but it put me in a daze because it had been a while since we spoke. Then you took my hand… the first time you held my hand was that moment.”

“ It's a bit pathetic , I know. But I can't seem to help it.”

…

“I am glad you didn't kick me out though. I don't want to go back home…”

“I can still stay … right?”

…

“Thanks .”

“I'll still take care of you. I'll never go back on my promise.”

[Speaker's mood lifts as Listener explains and thanks him for everything]

“Thanks for that. I need that.”

“ I actually appreciate it.”

“ Ordering breakfast actually sounds good. The plan says breakfast before 12 but I guess exceptions can be made this one time .”

Sunshine non-negotiable, significantly boosts mood and productivity. Hmm. Am I forgetting something? Oh! Graduated to regular toothbrush and toothpaste. Nice, another milestone. So that equals one reward and–”

[Speaker is cut of , startled]

“My God! Good morning my dearest ! You got me again there.”

“You're up early. That's wonderful isn't it?”

“Well I always have to be up before you to get everything ready.”

[Speaker says eagerly]

“Come on sweetheart! Sit, sit, sit, sit, sit! I made your favorite and it is warm, just how you like it.”

“Well I was just updating your chart. You know we have a plan and I am very serious about it. You have been doing really well and I am tracking what works so I can keep you that way.”

“Yes I did notice that we should celebrate that. Every milestone reached deserves a reward of course.”

“Sneaky girl, I will not tell you what it is, you know the rules, it's a surprise. But I promise you it's something that you really love, you just have to trust me on this. Didn't you like all your other gifts?”

“Exactly! So it's the same thing Princess, you will see when you get it.”

“That is the highest compliment, I feel like a chef. Thank you my dear. I did promise you that I would make all your meals homemade and I plan to keep that promise.”

[Speaker dramatizes]

“I would like to thank the Academy, Food Network and of course Gordon Ramsay's Hell's kitchen.”

“Oh I really missed your laugh. I almost forgot how sweet you sounded with your little giggles. I love seeing you happy, I love seeing you laugh and I love seeing you smile. Even though you don't do it as much as you used to, I think I am seeing a bit of your spark and that is good enough for me. It makes me happy to see you get better by a little bit everyday.”

“Whatever you want , I'll make sure it's on the menu.”

“I told you not to think about that. I feel really bad when you say stuff like that darling. I keep telling you that it is my job. It is my job to make sure that you have everything you want but most importantly everything you need. You never owe me anything. And when you say things like that, it hurts my feelings sweetheart because we are so much more than that, can't you see?”

“So please, could you stop saying that, for me?”

“Perfect ! So happy we had that talk!”

[Speaker gets caught up with Listener's progress and goes on a distracted tangent mumbling to himself]

“Oh this is great progress for the tracker. I need to write this meal down before I forget. I'll have to add this to the rotation since she really likes it… I need to log this-”

[Speaker is brought back to reality by Listener]

“Oh dear I'm so sorry. I just got so excited from your progress I just got a little distracted.”

“What do you mean you've been having weird dreams?”

…

“About…me ?”

[Speaker giggles shyly]

“What about me?”

[Speaker get a bit guarded and deflects]

“Yeah you're right, that's definitely a dream.”

…

[Laughs nervously]

“Maybe you actually got up and got it yourself. That's like 3 in the morning, why would I be in your room handing you water?”

…

“You must have been so tired that you forgot that you went for it.”

…

“Exactly. No need to take a dream so seriously.”

[Speaker quickly changes the subject]

“I am all done with the dishes. How about I get a popsicle from the fridge as a treat?”

“No, that's not the surprise .”

[ Speaker dramatizes]

“And the last pineapple smoothie popsicle goes to…”

[Speaker mimics a drum roll]

“The girl,the only girl of the hour, every hour!”

“Absolutely not, this is all yours. I like the rest of the flavors so you can keep yours to yourself. You deserve it anyway.

“You are so cute lemon. Always something yellow with you.”

“You'll know when your surprise is here.”

“No guessing games for it either. What about being patient, huh?”

“You better focus on that popsicle before it melts and makes a mess.”

“If I tell you it would be ruined. But don't worry, it's sooner than you think. That's all I'll tell you.”

“Anyway my dear, it is laundry day and I have to get to work. You have your own day planned out so I'll leave you to get to that, I'll handle everything else.”

[ Speaker leaves Listener to do the Laundry , humming as he works ]

SFX: the sounds of laundry: the dull thump of clothes being sorted and thrown into the wash , the filling of the machine, the swishing and sloshing of water and clothes.

[ As Speaker hums away as he does chores, there is a knock on the door]

[He mumbles excitedly to himself]

“It's here!”

[ He calls to Listener in the other room]

“Could you get the door dear? I'm occupied.”

[ Speakers giggles to himself as he listens to Listener going to the door ]

[ Listener closes the door and returns inside ]

“Surprise !”

“ Do you like them?”

…

“ You always lingered by the flower shops when we would take our walks. So this is what I came up with for you.”

…

“ And I do have a confession, but you have to read the card.”

…

“I feel really bad for lying to you this morning. It really wasn't a dream.”

…

“Please , before you say anything just let me explain.”

…

“ After the worst official meeting on earth when I promised that I would take care of you, I cut a key while I was in the house. That's also why I moved your keys from the bowl at the door . If I could do it, some creep would come and do the same thing . But back to the topic ! That's how I was getting in so early. Then I thought to myself , I could help you even more if I was with you everyday. You were not doing great so I couldn't ask you so I just kinda started … moving myself in.”

“ I really wanted to ask but I was scared you would say no. I was gonna tell you as you saw from the card. But I lied today because when you mentioned the dreams I panicked.”

“ I got so used to being with you everyday. It's not the same as watching from afar . I get to actually be here and be around you…”

[ Speaker gets nervous ]

“ I guess I'm confessing that … “

[ He lets out a shaky exhale ]

“ I like you … So much. Very much. I really want you to get better and you're slowly getting there . But I'm scared that once you get everything back that you won't want me here anymore. We didn't start out… in a normal way and I'm scared that … well, you'd want nothing to do with me anymore. I really wouldn't be able to take that.”

…

“I just want you to give me a chance. Just keep me around. Now that I know what it feels like to have dreams come true and get everything I dreamed of, I don't think I can ever give that up. I don't want to give it up. Don't let me have to think about that, please.”

[ Listener stands in silence contemplating the very unconventional living arrangements she has been ignoring ever since her life seemed to fall apart ]

[ Speaker gets uneasy with the heavy silence . The tune of the Laundry being done suddenly fills in the space]

[ His voice small and hesitant]

“... Please?”

[ Listener stands still, her first words after his confessing throwing him off]

“ Ahhh… yes I can put them in a vase but you didn't –”

[ Listener doesn't give him a chance to get back to the topic before walking away leaving him confused]

“Umm dearest ? Won't you answer me ?”

…

“ I've never slept in your room. I'd never do that without you knowing . I swear.”

…

[ Speaker still hesitant with his words ]

“Yes we still have our walk this evening…”

…

“ I know this is a bit much to process but–”

[ Listener cut him off the moment he tries to steer the conversation back ]

“ Uhh, yes. We can get ice cream on our way back.”

…

“ Okay.”

[ There is another heavy pause. Listener is silent and Speaker is afraid to break it first. Listener chimes in ]

“ I'm glad you like them.”

[ The air remains awkward with Listener never addressing Speaker’s confession ]

“ Umm… I have to put the clothes in the dryer ….”

[ Speaker lingers for a while]

“ Would you like anything special for dinner?”

…

“I can do any you wa–”

[ Listener cut him off again]

“ Okay , I'll decide .”

[ Speaker sighs softly as he speaks up the now painfully awkward and uncertain air, not at all how he pictured his confession to go when he planned it ]

[ He whispers as he walks back to the laundry ]

“ I'll wait for your answer .”
