Kobo Clara Color battery lifetime

Ive had my KCC for about 17 months and have read for ~250hours. I have kept the battery generally between 20 to 90 charged, never been to zero.

It suddenly wont hold a charge. In sleep mode or off, it will lose 30 to 50 percent in 1 to 2 days. It is supposed to last for 300 to 500 charging cycles and its been nowhere that, maybe 15 cycles at most.

Its an easy fix, but have any others had experience qith the battery crapping out prematurely?

Syncing using WebDAV- backup or better options?

I read almost exclusively using Koreader using 2 Kobo devices and my mobile phone. Most people can care less, but I track days and hours read, hours per book, time per page, and similar data. When I will read on a different device, I will sync the first and then the second device. Sometimes there are complications and it takes multiple tries.

I wasn't sure if when you sync it just adds new data, or if it replaces the entire database each time. With a little research it looks like it is the later. It would be very easy to erase a bunch of data, especially if you do it first thing in the morning when in a fog before leaving for the day. Now I am paranoid that I will unknowingly erase a bunch of metadata with a bad sync.

So for those who are more knowledgeable about this than me, is there a sync option where you are simply adding new data to your database, or is there way to backup daily where if you accidently corrupts your database you can just revert to the previous backup? Maybe every sync is already available on the Koofr server?

E-ink generations

I just received a Kobo Libra 2 and am blown away by the quality of the screen. I am coming from a Kobo Clara Colour, but also have a Kindle Paperwhite 2018.

I never cared for the screen on the Kindle. It does not have a warm light, but I just did not like it. The KCC is colour with loss of contrast, but I still liked it better. The contrast and sharpness on the KL2 is out of this world, even with the backlight dim/off.

The Kindle has an E-ink Carta screen, while the KL2 has an E-ink Carta 1200 screen. It is only supposed to be a minor increase in contrast, like 15%, but I would almost say the improvement is night and day. I suspect the extra glass on the flush screen is warping the light a little, and I think this is why I prefer the KCC as that screen is also recessed. Does anyone have any insight? Does the larger size screen on the Kobo have any effect?

I took photos with my phone camera, but I was not able to reproduce in any tangible way the effect that I am seeing, so I did not post them.

Its a shame flush screens are mostly being phased out, except for entry level 6" screens. The flush screen is marketed as "a feature."

Not a fan of white case- Kobo

I have purchased a used Kobo Libra 2. These devices are slim pickings at the moment, and overpriced due to demand. I wanted black but it seems white is more widely available. I think white was a poor choice by Kobo, but I think a lot of females like this color. Gray, silver, and even matcha are all pleasant colors, but white reflects way too much light and it is terribly distracting. There is a reason that TV's and computer screens have a black bezel.

I am looking for a case that will cover the bezel, preferably in black or any dark color. I have also seen "cases" or "skins" where it is just a decal that is affixed to the device and available in many colors and pattern. Does anyone have any experience with any of these products?

Upgrading to larger color e-reader

I have owned the Kobo Clara Color for 1.5 years and I enjoy the device and now read almost exclusively digital. The 6" screen size is cramped and for large books, even with small text there can be well over 2000 pages to turn. I would like to upgrade to 7-8" screen. I have been researching for weeks.

I don't really care about battery life, SD-card slot, android or non-android, stylus support, or ecosystem/available library.

I do care about:

_ Integration with Calibre and Koreader- this is most important.

_ Subjective- ergonomics, intuitive UI, and "snappiness."

_ Page turn buttons are a bonus.

_ Right to repair. Kobo is the only one that has user-serviceable parts where owner can replace the screen or battery. With the fragility of e-ink screens, I feel like this is a big one.

Models I am considering:

_ Kobo Libra Color *I like the UI and build quality of the Clara Color

_ Pocketbook Inkpad Color 3 *8 inch screen, woohoo!

_ Pocketbook Era Color

_ Onyx Boox Go Color 7

I would appreciate feedback from others who own these devices. Thanks!

Which file format for Koreader?

I used to use the Kobo UI exclusively. Once I became more proficient with Koreader, it has become my main interface. I still use Kobo to browse my library and skim books initially. I have about 1000 files on my device and they virtually all in kepub format.

I understand that .epub is the better format to use within Koreader. I haven't however come upon any limitations while using .epub in Koreader (at least that I'm aware of). It's supposed to be better for displaying footnotes, rendering the margins, and fonts. Would it be worthwhile to convert and reupload the files on my Kobo device from .kepubs to .epubs? Or, does it just make sense that any files I upload from now on be in .epub format? For those that have used both, is there any discernible difference in use?

Edit: I don't know if it matters, but the files were downloaded originally as .epub. When sent using Calibre to my Kobo, they were uploaded as .kepub. Interestingly, on the device the files are named .kepub.epub. It does not matter if I send .epub or .kepub, it's filename on the device ends in .kepub.epub. If I send one of each file type, there is still only the one file displayed as ".kepub.epub." Color me confused!!!

My Calibre Library on my PC has one of each file type. I'm not sure what is happening.

Syncing koreader statistics

It took a few hours, but I am finally able to sync books between Kobo and my Android phone using the Koreader Readest plugin. I was under the impression that it syncs reading stats as well, but it seems that it does not.

Syncing reading progress is convenient, but I can just as easily pick up on chapter 3 on a different device without this. What I am really interested in is the Koreader-specific data such as "Total time spent on this book," and "Average time per page," and "Days reading this book." This data is kept in the .sdr file and I thought that is shared.

If Readest cannot do this, can u

Koofr or Dropbox?

Sync between devices

Im looking to sync reading progress and stats between my main Kobo device and and my Samsung Android device. I have Koreader installed on both. Im not currently using my mobile to read, but want to avoid taking the Kobo device with me.

I have read about different ways to do this using Koreader itself, Readest, or Dropbox. Im not sure which way makes the most sense. I am most concerned with continuing to track reading statistics- time and page turns and whatnot and am frankly a little confused.

Conditioning my board

I have an acacia end-grain board that was in need of TLC. The wood was very rough, dry, and gray. I sanded it down and applied ONE application of mineral oil.

The board is so pleasant feeling Im considering leaving it as is. I want to seal it however so Im applying conditioner. Im sure the board would easily soak up another coat or two of mineral oil. Im just concerned it will be saturated and not take up the conditioner. Is there any advantage to applying more mineral oil, or go right to conditioner?

Choosing a diamond compound

I am comfortable using a aharpening stone. I am however newer to hard steels. I had purchased two Shun Classic chef knives and was able to bring back a nice edge.

Stropping however, Ive only used newsprint in the past. I just purchased a Hutsuls smooth red leather strop. I also purchased Scotchen diamond paste in 3k, 5k, and 14k grit. After multiple passes with the 5k grit I see a modest improvement. I have read that these Amazon purchased diamond pastes contain little diamond and are of poor quality. Would it be recommended to buy a better compound from a reputable knife shop? Can anyone suggest a product for this VG Max steel?
